Trav is an urban dog, so doesn't encounter many dead things that might trigger his 'roll in it' instinct.  The few dead birds, rodents or fish we've found haven't appealed to him.  He'll sniff the corpse, then seem to shrug and move on.

Tonight he found something that triggered the instinct.  I gave him a Cod Liver Oil softgel, and after picking it up, dropping it, nosing it around for a while, he started to lie down and roll on it!  Yikes!  This is human grade stuff!  LOL

What has your doodle found worthy of rolling on or in?

Omg I started to read this dreading the outcome and cursing people and their evilness! Lol but what a great ending! Dumb farmer!

Riley rolled in some black gloopy stuff that stank and was, I think, the remains of something that was once alive.  I ran with him accompanied by thousands of bluebottles to our home and then straight into the shower but it was not quick enough to prevent a skin rash that needed anti-biotics and steroids to clear it up.  These days I try to preempt 'the roll' and can see at 100 yards that sniffing and shoulder down circle thing just in time to put a 'stop' to what is by all accounts a very strong instinct indeed.

Oh, no!  That almost sounds like hazardous waste!  Yes, the shoulder down circle thing--that's what Trav was doing.  Nice that they have a 'tell' for this behavior.

While walking on the beach Jake shot up ahead,  ran up the sand towards someone's house and started rolling in something.......and then we SMELLED it......a BIG piece of whale blubber that had been baking in the sun for days......with pools of whale oil shimmering in the sun......the other dogs he was with didn't participate at all, they just watched him rolling around in it.

Gross! Pretty funny that the other dogs just watched!!!

Ewwwww....ripe whale blubber.  It is funny that the other dogs just watched.  :)

I'm glad that in the middle of Michigan I will never have to worry about my boys rolling in ripe Whale Blubber =:))

Pat, The bigger question for Vern would be, what hasn't he rolled in? The best one was horse poop.  When he got up from his roll, it was hanging off his face and he just continued on his merry way. Even my dog sitter said she has grown used to Vern's "smells". LOL Just last week, he rolled in something very gross in our nearby field and the groomer had to give him THREE baths to get it off and he had just been groomed a week prior to that incident. Fudge, thankfully, has never rolled in anything :)

Picture?  : )

Laurie, of course Vern has introduced you to everything gross that exists around him.  lol   I can just see him with the horse poop decorations!  Sometimes I'm really glad I'm not a groomer.  :)

LOL...I totally understand!  Darn dogs are so proud of themselves prancing around with brown slim hanging off of them.  But then comes the big decision - take them into the house for a bath in the tub with warm water OR get the hose from the barn and spray them down outside with cold ground water...hmmmm

Personally, I just use the outside hose.  It's usually on the neck, shoulder or head and not all over and this poop Haley rolls in hoses off well.
