For Christmas, my son gave me a " Trophy Cam". We strapped to a Palm tree just outside the grass line and pointed up a hill on our property. It is motion activated. Here is what it "caught" the other night/morning! 5 coyotes!
I love seeing the wildlife ...but these guys make me nervous with Enzo. At 44 or so lbs( 7 months) she thinks every living being is her best friend. She'd be no match for these guys.
Now...if should catch Big Foot on the cam...I'm outta here! :p

Scary!!!! I'm won't leave my 7 pound yorkie alone in my city backyard for fear of owls or hawks plucking him from the ground. Soon his doodle brother Hudson will be big enough to scare them off. But coyotes...NEVER!
When Enzo was a small puppy we were very concerned with hawks, owls and eagles!

I would never let a dog run free on an unfenced property anyway. Too many things can and do happen, no matter how big it is or what kind of wildlife you have.

Coyotes have attacked large dogs in unfenced backyards right here in my congested suburban neighborhood, and killed small dogs. They are hungry and desperate. Enzo would definitely be no match for them.

Our property is completely fenced in...but the coyotes scale the 6 ft fence with ease!
Another neighbor has 3 HUGE German Shepards, again, in completely fenced property. A few months back, one male was out by himself. A female coyote was able to lure him further out in the property, where he was attacked by a whole pack of coyotes. He was able to fend them off, but not before suffering many bites and scratches.
Many small dogs and cats have disappeared from the neighborhood. We do live in a rural area, but, I just don't understand people letting their animals roam, knowing there are predators out and about.

I'd be keeping Enzo close to home too!  There are few dogs if any that could successfully take on 5 coyotes. Very scary.

Fascinating yet scary! We have some around here, but I haven't seen any. We are in a neighborhood but my friend lives in a more rural area. Her yard is fenced but it's kind of like chicken-wire; you can see through it. She said that one coyote goes up to the fence and gets her chocolate lab all riles up, then tries to get him to follow him. They said it's a tactic to get the dog over to the pack where they can attack. Very scary stuff!

Yikes--we have them around here too---but not in the yard and I have invisible fence--my daughter had a sheep when she lived on a farm and the sheep, who was hand raised and very friendly, loved the farm's dogs---and was later killed by a coyote. My daughter thinks the sheep just walked up to the coyote to play.

Ginny, That is so sad. Nature can be a scary thing sometimes.

That is sad.

My husband tells a story about the coyotes in California.   Often a Coyote, smart as they are, will send a coyote in heat down the mountains.  Neighborhood dogs will follow that coyote back to the pack and become dinner  :(   Clever. Creepy.

I hear this same story over and over. Smart and creepy!

Yikes!  It must take a lot to feed that pack.  Cats left outside at night around here don't last very long.  Enzo would probably try to chase these guys, and the results wouldn't be good at all!

We were out in the yard last week and one was up on a hill about 50 yards from us. It must have been sleeping in the bushes and jumped up when it heard us. Enzo was leashed ( thank God), and she went ballastic barking at it. I have no doubt she would have chased it...but, I think it would have been to play. As smart as she is...clueless when it comes to something like this! Her tail was wagging like crazy!
