Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Our five month old goldendoodle is absolutely beautiful and a dream to train.  However, both my husband & myself get so frustrated as she constantly eats anything she finds on the floor.  Mulch, leaves, hedgehog poo & even a golf tee !!  It has resulted in a trip to the vets, but my question is does it ever stop or even ease just a little bit !!

Any advice would be gratefully received, from a thundery Hertfordshire, UK.

Laughing here because one of my first dogs as an adult was to clean the floor.  Yes, that was exactly why I said, " I want a dog"

( of course--not so) but the Lab did keep the floor under the babies highchair clean.  Perfectly clean.

So, you need to teach the LEAVE IT command.  Sounds like a good one for your dog to learn.

Toys--leave a ton laying around. A smart dog does not mean the easiest dog to have in the home.  They are curious and get into things.  Leave something out for your dog to get into.

If you find the dog has something it should not have, besides the " leave it " command there is also the exchange program.

If you have things around the dog may have, exchange the unwanted object with something they can have.

Amante did that. He out grew it. Work on Leave it command, it will come!!

You may want to keep a leash on her at home so that you can give a tug when working on "Leave it" and remove her from the item quickly--then make sure you praise her with "Good leave it!" when she comes to you. It helps to have a tiny treat with you also. She will get it!

Most dogs grow out of it. Training is the key!

However, my MILs dog (not a doodle) is extremely food motivated and will eat everything she can, including my lip balm and the sweater pocket the lip balm was in.

Hopefully she will let it go. Leave it is key.
