Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I took Meg in for her bath this morning and while we were waiting for the groomer to get there we practiced her manners a bit. A man pulled up with a truckload of 'tweeners' to do some service work at the vet's office there. He came right over, with all the kids, and asked if he could approach her and I gave him permission. He then asks, 'if she a full Airedale?' and I said not at all, she is a scruffy coated labradoodle. and he actually says, "oh, she is a mutt..." what? Did he really say that to us? Don't ask me how, because I was seething after it was over but I continued to smile and said to him, "of course she is a mutt, a well bred mutt to tell the truth, BUT, she does not know that, no matter what she just thinks she is a well cared for, well mannered and much loved part of the family and no matter what type of dog she walks past...she knows she is just as good" Why would any one think it is there business to point out the pedigree or lack of for any one else's pet, my own pedigree is pretty mixed...just sayin.
By the way, we were still practicing our 'sit/stay' with all the commotion when he came back out and decided to compliment her on her behavior.

So are you saying the words highlighted above aren't yours because this sure sounds like a condemnation of the doodle breed to me.
I find it very hard to believe those hardcore breeders would give up a dog in their line to start breeding doodles.
"You are a groomer and we were willing to listen to your grooming advice but I find your more recent posts to be somewhat judgmental and I for one am becoming a little bit annoyed."
I wonder if she was an Airedoodle if he would've asked if she's a mutt? LOL
Judy, next time tell him to kiss your butt mutt!
I do think it is probably a rude comment, but agree that you shouldn't get too upset over it. It is true that they are mutts, and we should act proud about what they are. I maybe would have responded with, "Yes, she is a mixed breed" or something like that. We all know how awesome our doodles are; we should feel sorry for those who don't have the love of a doodle!
I really do know that Meg is a mutt, I really don't have any problem with her being a mutt and didn't get her for a pedigree or to make her be a 'registered' dog or anything other than exactly what she is. My problem with the comment is that it IS rude after you have asked someone what their dog is to point out to them that they are a mutt. I am not staying upset about it, just found it rather surprising that he did that.
Yes, I can completely understand your surprise and annoyance. I've gotten many negative comments about the fact that I chose a Goldendoodle. It's amazing how political the dog world is, isn't it?
Hi Penelope. I know you are new here, but once you have spent some time reading around the site you will find lots of members involved in rescue and many of us old timers that are totally infuriated by the myths of non shedding, perfect family dogs, train themselves etc. that are advertised by bad breeders. I am not able to link you right now but do a search on breeder lies and you may come up with something.
BG is correct-and honestly your post does not make sense to me.
Not sure if you were responding to me or not - but if so you aren't "just the opposite". I agree with you that myths about doodles being hypoallergenic or having "hybrid vigor" are damaging and very misleading for potential owners. I also believe that there are upsides and downsides to any dog breed, Poodle mixes included.
Mutt and Mongrel to me tend to be words to indicate lower value. Mutt less so. So I tend to not like their use by strangers about my dogs. Because usually it seems what is said is "just a mutt" as though not being a pure breed makes a dog inherently less worthy or important. But I also realize they are not always used in this way and just means 'mixed breed' so sometimes I call mine 'doodle mutts' or 'poodle mutts' or 'half lab-half poodle' so I don't have to explain the word labradoodle. But to me when I hear 'mutt' I also think unknown breed mix or "Heinz 57" and usually an oops litter from an ooops litter from an oops litter -- not very descriptive or helpful in understanding what went into the dog. That's different than a purposely mixed breed dog where both parents (and hopefully ancestors before that) have been health tested.
There you go...that is exactly what he seemed to imply. He asked, I explained what she was and him coming back with the word mutt seemed like he was explaining to me that I could call her what I like but she is "actually a mutt".
Again, I have no problem with a mutt and some of my favorite dogs have been exactly that. I can call Meg anything I want to but he does not have that right. Probably a nice guy but I didn't like that he was explaining to me what I REALLY had.
