It occurred to me that holiday pictures and all that bokeh lend themselves to great examples of how depth of field can change an image. So show us some examples. Of course straight holiday shots and doodles always welcome. And just for a surprise this is a day early! Happy holidays all.

Wow, very different effects!

Both were shot on Auto White Balance so I am amazed that none of the colored ornaments lent their color to the bokeh in the second image.

Nice comparison!  I have yet to give it a try!

Thanks.  Love to see your results.

Lovely bokeh in both!

Thanks DJ.

FIRST PICTURES OF THE YEAR

Narrow depth of field isolating Holly from background...

Longer focal length provides a more condensed depth of field and isolates Holly even better. Holly was in the shade of the patio cover.  Fill flash balanced her against the background,  Otherwise, she would be a silhouette...

Both are lovely. I like seeing beautiful Holly in her surroundings. The second is a beautiful portrait.

These are beautiful, Richard. Holly not only has a great but a great place too.

She is such a lovely dog and the lighting in each of these is great.

I love this view of Holly. Both are beautiful.
