My groomer recommended Mal A Ket shampoo to prevent swimmer's itch. It's expensive ($99 for a gallon), but I ordered it online and got free shipping.

So far, it seems to be working. After a swim, I rinse the dogs off and wash them with the shampoo. Only catch is that they have to sit with the shampoo in their hair for 5-10 minutes. I worked out a routine that they have accepted:

1. dog1 goes in shower, gets rinsed, shampooed, ears cleaned

2. dog 1 leaves shower, sit/stays next to me

3. dog 2 goes in shower, gets rinsed, shampooed, ears cleaned

4. dog 2 leaves shower, sit/stays next to me, while

5. dog 1 goes back in the shower and gets shampoo rinsed off

6. dog 1 gets dried with towel, shakes, leave bathroom

7. dog 2 re-enters shower, gets shampoo rinsed off

8. dog 8 gets dried with towel, shakes, leaves bathroom

9. I change my clothes which are now completely soaked

10. dogs get blowdried, ears dried

11. dogs and I take a nap

Phew.

Geez, I wouldn't get past the dog leaves the shower, sit/stays next to me. When Gracie is done being washed that is her sign to get the zoomies. There is no way she would ever sit that long, especially if I turned my back on her to wash another dog!!! You have amazing Doodles!
Eva ... Just curious as to how often you are able to give them baths. Do they swim often? I'm always worried that I'll give baths too often and probably error way on the side of caution. Would love to be able to do it more. I have to agree with Nancie though, I'd never be able to do both at the same time. One will always lay on the floor beside us while the other gets a bath, but wouldn't be laying still if she were wet! You obviously have yours trained very well. I particularly like the part where "shake" doesn't enter the picture until after they are rinsed and dried off and ready to leave the bathroom .... shake happens here as soon as I take both my hands off of them for any reason. Usually more than once during a bath.

I use a medicated shampoo that is supposed to remain on for 5 mins, so what I do is just put it on the parts that they are usually the itchest 1st, then I just use the 5 mins for some good ole massage time which they really enjoy which I "hope" makes them like their baths more! That 5 mins does seem like a very long time though.
sorry for the delay in answering you: at the moment, the dogs swim almost every day, and they get a bath after every swim. The MalAKet shampoo is mild enough for everyday use. I am actually quite pleased that we have not had any skin problems so far this summer!!!

Do you do this once a week or everytime the dogs swim? My dogs in the pool almost everyday I can't imagine doing that routine everyday. I barely can brush him and dry him at the end of each day. God bless you sister!
