I have two amazing Australian Labradoodles and they are really mellow, but full of life when given the chance to play outside. My experience with the breed has been remarkable really. The breeder's aim is to breed them to be mellow and it seems that his dogs are that way. We are a guardian home to our Annie and feel really fortunate to have that opportunity. I hope that over time yours will mellow with age! ;)
Guess you just got lucky to have one that is busy. There is a great book 'Chill Out Fido' which is good for learning how to calm a dog.
My most busy dog is not an ALD. She is an F1 and she has more energy than all my ALD's put together. BUT she is my best Rally O dog because of her enthusiasm and recently got her Novice Title at her first trial. Not only that, but she came 3rd out of 13 in all 3 events. I also took one of my ALD's and he timed out before I could get him around the course. lol
I have two ALDs- Tigger and Roo. They are full brothers from different litters. Roo is extremely active, Tigger is very mellow. Most dogs do not "mature' until about three years of age. Even then there will be noticeable differences between them. All dogs, from mutts to show dogs have different temperments, just like all the children in a family will be different.
Some breeds are more apt to be highly active, but will still have mellow dogs too and some in the middle. Some totally mellow breeds can have very active dogs, but more numbers of quiet dogs.
Lani, my ALD, is only 9 month old and is totally hyperactive! She reminds me of my mother. When I was a kid my mom would literally come into my room, full of energy, and say "Up! Up! Up! Time to get up!". She always drove me crazy because she bounced out of bed with insane amounts of energy and that's how Lan is, lol. Lani drives her English Bulldog sister, Roxie, completely batty! I call her Lani Kangaroo because all her energy makes her bounce around the house like a kangaroo. She does eventually calm down, and she is only 9 montha old lol. So we will she if she ever loses that puply energy.
