The poodle standard calls for all colors to have black pigment except for brown dogs, whose pigment should match their coat color. Pink or rose noses are a very serious fault.
I have to admit that I still do prefer the black or dark pigment; I think you're right about Jack, because his lips are still very black.

Oh and SADLY liver nosed labs (with their amber eyes) are considered a fault and can't be shown in conformation in AKC. Supposedly it's because initially hunters found them to look to 'spooky' and whoever created the show standard agreed. Honestly I didn't used to like liver pigment in light dogs...but I LOVE it now that I have Rosco! A creamy doodle with a pink nose...soooo pretty =)

I would say both Yankee and Jack are black pigment dogs...that have lightened with temperature and age rather than a true liver pigment dog who is rose/pink/brown genetically from birth. Not that they aren't adorable as they are!

Typically true rose/liver/pink/brown nosed dogs have the same color lips and eyeliner and I believe have light eyes (green or amber) vs. brown.

I'm not sure but I don't think that noses of black (coat) dogs ever lighten, but light colored coats with black noses quite often do fade.

I think Yankee's nose is like Jack's...brownish-rose. I'm at work & can't post a photo, but will later.

Jack's nose has gotten lighter since I adopted him at 14 months. It started out dark brown, and then the middle part got kind of rose colored. My DD said we were kissing all the color off of it, lol!
