I am letting Murphy's hair grow longer for the winter and it's about 2 1/2 inches now. I have always thought the back half of his hair was a dry, frizzy texture, but now it's really gotten frizzy. Like all splitends.   I use the Les Pooches brush and he almost matt free most of the time, so it's not that I'm tearing or pulling matts out. I use cowboy magic when he does get matts and a bodyshine spray that is supposed to help with the dry feel, but it doesn't that I can see.

Anyone have any conditioners or products they use to help with this?  I use good dog shampoo and conditioner when I give him a bath too. It's only on the back half of his body, rest is silky soft curls/waves.

Monday. Well I finally got around to grooming Mr. Frizzy, and his coat is looking MUCH better.  Lots of whispy frayed hair came off. I scissor cut his whole body as I like to keep him about 2 inches.  Used some Cowboy Magic after and he looks 100% better. I will get a picture up later, He's sleeping now...exhausted from standing and sitting up on the table for 3 hours. But he got lots of treats and lots of mommy kisses.

Can I put a picture here in this discussion and ask if this is all Kemp or a puppy coat, or possible poor nutrition. My foster girl has beautiful shinny black hair except for this spot on the back. I need an opinion on what this looks like. KEMP?

Looks like someone may have shaved this area or she may have had fleas and not treated also. Not the greatest pictures, but this is wirey and mean. The rest of the coat is thin but pretty
Yes Barb, it is straighter than the rest, but I can get it to be a bit wavy when I scrunch it while it's air drying after a bath. Then it's not quite so course looking. I was wondering if I was brushing too often, (everynight) and the Les Pooches brush does seem like it could easily break the hair more. Do you feel so? Which comb do you recommend for this type hair? I will trim tomorrow tho too, it is a bit too whispy on the ends.

He is going thru some coat changes as his "roots" are much lighter than the ends of his coat now. He was last cut down to 1/2 inch in Sept. when he was just 9 months old, and his tail has gotten much lighter and the top of his head has gotten kind of dreadlocky. I love all the different textures and shades of colors.
I'll try brushing less and see how long he will go without matting.
I don't want to tell you not to brush if you are experiencing the coat change right now, but I do suggest using just the comb instead of the brush. If you run into a matt, pick up your brush then. I usually comb my dudes first and if it starts pulling too much I hang onto the hair and protect the dog from the pulling. If that doesn't work, I move on to the brush and then back to the comb. If I was allowed only 2 tools to groom with chooseI would a comb and some scissors.
This texture of hair has always been this way, it's not a change due to adult coat, it's only more noticable due to the extra length. It just doesn't seem like an undercoat or something that needs to be stripped. I will do a search to see what you have talked about in the past posts regarding combs. I have some cheap scissors, but am thinking of moving up. What do you recommend in scissors and where did you purchase them?

Thanks for all your help. I am going to get this tackled this week. Will use EPO when order comes in. He gets fish oil, always has, but maybe needs something different now.
