Stew has a wavy coat, but it's curly in spots. His back towards his tail is pretty curly. The last time he was groomed, the groomer didn't trim his tail but cut him to 3/4 inch just before the base of his tail, with the tail still fluffy.

Now that hair is growing in curly. The beginning of his tail is wavy but it's gotten dull & frizzy looking lately. The rest of his tail is normal, the same as it's always been. I'm wondering how to groom this-when I brush it out, it looks very odd, at least to me with the dull part standing out.

I took a picture but I couldn't get Stew to hold his tail up. The curly part is the base, then the frizzy/dull part, then the thin part is the rest of his tail.

There are a few things that help a tail look good.

First, the tail should blend into the coat so there should be a graduated transition from the short back to longer tail.

Second, the tail should be shortened a bit when the coat is shortened so that the haircut has balance.

I hold the tail up and brush all the coat down and then take my scissors at a 45 degree angle and cut like I was doing a saw tooth edge. It's important to not be too accurate. If you do it too well, it won't have a natural look. Sometimes I do the cutting first and the brushing after then just trim up the parts that look out of place.

For your dog, I wouldn't hesitate to cut off the old dull frizzy part and then see if you need to shorten some of the other parts of the tail.

It appears to me the groomer needs to cut down Stewart's back further, extending down the base of the tail. That's if I'm seeing it correctly. The bases of my 2's tails grow in very tightly curled, and when brushed that base gets frizzy if it's too long. I clip down the base of the tail about 1-1/2" to minimize it, and also scissor cut the sides extending beyond the base, tapering it to blend in with the fuller tail beyond. It may not be precisely a 'doodle cut' tail base, but it is something I can live with, which looks neat and tidy and doesn't mat,
Thanks! Barb- I thought it was so odd that the groomer did that with his tail. It doesn't look too bad, but it definitely needs to be trimmed. Stew gets cling ons easily and freaks when I go to hold up his tail, so I doubt I could do it myself, but I really want to! If only I had a grooming noose to hold him steady. He's a terrible wiggler!

Debb- Thanks, I guess I just need to be more specific when I take him in to be groomed.

If Hershey's tail starts to get really dull looking, in addition to cutting I rub a small amount of Cowboy Magic and brush it out daily for 3-5 days.  I find that seems to do the trick!
