I've just taken the plunge and ordered a large green Les Pooch brush as well as the Emergency Mat Zap for my F1B, Max. I was wondering if anyone was aware of a video that would show me the proper use of the brushes? I'm so frustrated, every time I think we have the mat thing under control he just seems to grow them in multiples! Also, can anyone tell me a good way to remove the mats from his front and back sides of his back legs? This is where they are the worst.
Thanks,
Debbie

Here are pictures of an unbrushed leg, a brushed leg and a leg in the process. The foot is at the bottom of the pic each time. Brush all the hair against the direction of growth and then work down with the direction of growth in tiny layers. This is called line brushing. As you add each layer to the part already brushed, check with your comb to make sure you got all the tangles. For a really badly matted area, I do several rounds of line brushing and sometimes with different brushes.
These pictures could all have been taken of my Cooper. Which of yours is/are these photos of Barb?
This is Ruby's leg. I had to rehome her this year after she had slept by my bed for 4 years. When I looked up the pics I knew it was going to be hard. :(
I have to say though, the older couple that have her really needed her. They had one of my dogs before and she was killed on the road. The man had suffered a stroke previously and could not understand where his dog was. He is a super nice man who loves animals to bits. He is doing much better since he now has a faithful companion and the wife is very grateful because her husband is so much calmer. :)
aww Im glad Ruby is helping heal someone :)
it makes sense that the photos above look just like Cooper - Ruby and Cooper are full siblings, though different litters :)
Debbie, Thanks for asking the question. I am still on the fence about spending that much money on the brush. My Baylie is just 4 months old and so far is no trouble to brush. If she starts to mat and my brushes aren't cutting it, I'll bite the bullet and buy the Les Poochs. My question is, why are there bristles on both sides of the brush. What advantage is that. Is there a special technique for using both sides of the brush, or does it just double the life of the brush. This seems like such a dumb question, but I just had to ask.

You maybe should say 'when she starts to mat' . Puppy coats are very easy to deal with.
I find that tines on both sides helps save time removing fur from the brush - use one side til its full of fur, then the other side. Give treat to dog, remove fur, start all over again!
Exactly.
Max is 14 months old and I managed to keep him mat free up until this past summer. I injured my back and the grooming got away from me. We ended up having to get him shaved because of the mats. His hair is just growing back out to the length we like and I'd been managing with a slicker brush and comb and THEN! I gave him a bath myself and didn't blow dry him out and we are back at MATS! I'm with Barb, you should expect mats when the puppy fur blows... I am hoping that these Les Pooch brushes are the answer to the problem. They are set to arrive tomorrow, so I'll be sure to post our progress.
I have a Les Poochs brush. The tines on one side are straight ( for regular brushing) and the other side there is a slight indent on all tines about 1/4 inch from the end (use for getting mats out, etc). If it is a bad mat I make sure I hold the hair next to the skin between my fingers until I get the mat worked out. Charlie does not get mats too oftren because I have the time to give him a quick brush daily at the very least. I have the yellow one which I bought when we got Charlie because I was concerned about getting all the puppy coat out as he aged. I really like the brush and generally use that and also a steel comb with rotating teeth.
Hope this explains why the two sides to the brush.
some brushes, like my purple one, has bent tines on both sides. i forgot some have different sides. Thanks Linda
