Hi, our little Ellie who is 11 months, has recently been dx with severe Hip Dysplasia in both hips.  We are investigating FHO surgery, but hope to hear of others experience with this.  Unfortunately to doing a full hip replacement is just not feasible for us.  Our vet is confident she would do fine w/this surgery.  We are just worried b/c of her age, is this too young?

Thanks so much for the helpful comments.  I haven't contacted the breeder yet.  I think I am in shell shock right now.  This diagnosis has just hit me in the gut!

Yes I'm glad the dogs need to be to Icenic prior to a****… I just assumed the breeder would follow that. Trust you have to verify I found out. Periodically I do a search and she is already…. I realize that sometimes there can be. However, when you're breeding a dog that is when your own… That is out and out disregard for animal welfare. Even ithough we had clearances from three generations back… That mother was not fully cleared.

Sally, you brought up an important point, The hip testing is only done after two years of age, prior to that, it is a "prelim" score and really doesn't mean much. I don't think any of us realized how many breeders are only doing prelims when they say a dog has been "tested", and how many are breeding dogs under the age of two. I think this is something we all need to be aware of, asking the age of the parents before committing to a puppy.

So sorry to hear of hip dysplasia in any dog… Let alone a goldendoodle. We bought that breed because of hybrid vigor. Bought it from Amy Lane of Fox Creek Farms. She was the one that coined the name mini goldendoodle. Has four pages in the designer goldendoodle dog series. We paid $2000… She's an international breeder. Three months after getting Chuzzle I realized that I thought he had hip dysplasia. He ended up having to have bilateral FHO's. That involves cutting the ball from the socket…. He ended up having been false hips. Hips that were constructed of tendon muscle and scar tissue. He was about the worst case scenario that are surgeon had ever seen out of Pittsburgh. The balls were completely out of the sockets prior to the surgery.... Just resting on one corner. After $3600 for two surgeries and many months of recovery and pain. I'm happy to report the Chuzzle is now pain-free. We have to keep him under 50 pounds. Obviously he cannot run or jump like other doodles… But at least he's pain-free. When I gave Amy Lane all the documentation from the surgery… She did refund us the cost of the dog. That doesn't cover of course the entire surgery or what the dog went through or the current state of health. I know there are no complete guarantees, but we thought we were doing the best we could buy going to this breeder. Subsequently when doing research I found out that really you can't label a dog totally hip dysplasia free certified until two years of age. Chaz a was from the first litter of the mother who was only 13 months of age. The father was 10. She said she never had another dog with hip dysplasia… However I found out a few late years later that wasn't the case. It took a little while for hurts you stop breeding the mother as well. You do the best you can given the information you have. And hope for the best. I would never ever tell anyone that goldendoodles are not predispositions to hip dysplasia. I'm hearing of two many cases that they and up with it. Just was now five years old and active and happy. But his first 12 months of life for help because of the pain from the dysplasia and the surgeries. Just know that once they heal they can be happy, healthy and fun filled loving lives. HI Lisa,  I am so sorry to hear about Oliver having Hip Dysplasia.  My Dazi had hip dysplasia as a puppy.  I went to a specialist and they did an FHO surgery.  Her first one was Aug 7th of last year and they did the other side on Sept 30th.  It was a long tough time but she is now healed and doing excellent.  She runs and play and jumps without anymore pain.   If you want to talk to someone who has been though it I will be glad to talk to about it.

We just found out our two year old Doodle, Oliver has hip dysplasia.  Very depressed and down right now. The vet recommended we go to a specialist here in Colorado. Ugh, not what I expected!

Hi Jolene. Sorry you are worried about your doodle. Hopefully she does not have Hip Dysplasia. Willy showed signs of HD around 9 months old. His right hip was replaced with a titanium hip at 11 months. He had surgery on the other hip about a year ago.He never could lay on his back and never appeared to be in pain, but I know he was.  He was a very quiet dog and seemed to be a perfect puppy, but I now know it was because of his hips. It makes me sad to think of him in pain. We discovered he needed the second surgery at a doodle romp when he growled at dogs that he had been romping with since 4 months old. He went back to the romp for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. The breeder refunded all the money I had paid for him, but that was just a drop in the bucket to what the total cost has been. But he is the love of our lives and worth every dollar paid. Our Vet had a program with Wells Fargo that paid the vet and then you could make payments, interest free. This was very helpful. Unfortunately I did not have insurance.

As Karen said, please get insurance now.  Also, you will want to look very closely at the policies with regard to Hip Dysplasia.  Although they are covered, there are waiting periods on most policies (or at least there is on mine).  You can't get it today and then go to the Vet next week and get a diagnosis.  I can say though that the foster that I have right now we have commented several times that she runs like a Hackney Pony and I believe that her hips have been xray'd and checked for HD which was negative.  It is her knees.
