I've seen these living walls on HGTV a few times, and I'm thinking about getting my mom something like this for Christmas.  I don't know much about gardening in general, and I don't really know anything about these living walls, except that they look pretty cool.  Has anyone ever used these or heard of them?  Any thoughts?

Here's a link to one company that makes them.

I never heard of these. They look interesting but I would check, after you get some feedback here or on line in general, whether your mom thinks so too. I really don't like gifts that require care unless I'm in on the project beforehand and want to do the care.

I've talked to her about it in general, and she likes the idea.  But we haven't talked about the work or maintenance involved, so we'd definitely go over that before I would buy anything.

I think it looks pretty cool.  Would it be for outside or inside?  If inside, I would want to make sure the water is always contained and there is no way it can leak out on the wall or floor.  Otherwise, for someone who LOVES gardening then I would think they wouldn't consider it work but more like a fun project that is different.

You can use them outside or inside.  Inside, they are more work, since you have to have something to control the draining.  But I found another company that sells kits, so everything is self-contained.  It's a little more set up work, but then you don't have to worry about having it inside and dripping water.  I think she'd like to grow her own herbs inside, so we'd have to make sure she has a spot that gets the right amount of light.  Here's the link to the kit.

Once it is nice outside again, she may be interested in something outdoors that would hang on a deck rail.  Then it wouldn't be sitting on the ground where dogs and other critters can get to it easily.  If she decides she likes it, but would prefer to keep it outside, then we'll probably wait until Spring.

I just went to this site.I have never seen this before. Its really cool.It sure beats lots of pots around the house,or when I have to carry ALL my indoor pots outside in the spring and back again in the fall.I don't have a sunny wall in my house. It would be great because you would only have to go to one wall to water!!!!!!!

It looks awesome.  But I would be very wary of putting it inside anywhere that did not have tile floors.  Anything with water leaks eventually.
