I'm having a problem with slugs in my garden, I tried the hunt and pick method but it is not working. Has anyone used Safers Slug bait, it is supposed to be harmless to pets and birds. If I do use it I will make sure it is done in such a way that Quincy can't get at it and he is never left in the yard unsupervised. What are your thoughts?

The chemical in it is used as a food supplement it seems. Still I would try beer in jar lids first.

I used plastic cups sunk into the ground with the opening at ground level, and filled them 3/4 up with beer; believe it or not, somebody did a study on which beers slugs prefer, and Budweiser was the winner. I am such a genius, I bought Bud before even reading the study, mostly because it was cheap. It worked pretty well, but it didn't eliminate the problem. Every morning the cups were full of drowned slugs, but there always seemed to be more where they came from.

Make sure you don't have any decorative rocks or that type of thing in your garden, that's what started my slug problem. One big flat decorative rock.

What solved the slug problem was a product called Sluggo that I ordered on-line. It is supposed to be safe for pets, and it really worked well. I can't swaer to you that it is safe for pets, because my problem was in my front flower beds, and JD is not allowed in there.

Karen, my garden has numerous rocks and rock walls, there are a million and one places for slugs and snails to hide.

Oh, it's beautiful!

I can see why the slugs are a problem, it's like paradise to them!

Oh yes. A lovely garden for people and slugs : )
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!

How. literally do you keep your doodle out of the gardens?

Here is what I am going to try, I am going to put the slug bait in pieces of pvc piping and put a large rock on top to prevent the doodle for being able to get to it. Wish me luck. Quincy is only in the yard when I am out there and he doesn`t usually go foraging, he is too busy stealing my garden gloves and the sticks that I use for staking the plants. I`ll let you know how it works out. The funny thing is my husband runs a nursery and garden center and I told him I wasn`t using this without checking it out with you guys first, he just smiled and said nothing.
I was just reading that slugs & other soft bodies pesties in the garden do not like eggshells. I have recently crushed some up & put them around my rosebushes...I am praying it will help!
I think that's the same thing that diatomaceous earth is supposed to do.

I once bought a kind of slug that eats only other slugs and insects.  It pretty much cleared up my slug problem forever.  Unfortunately, I can not remember what the other slugs were called, but I bought them in the spring at a regular nursery.
