I was back in Boston visiting my son and his family.  In their front yard I saw this and thought it was so pretty.  My daughter-in-law is not a gardener and hasn't a clue as to what anything is in the yard.  The plants were all there when they moved in three years ago.  It must be a plant that you find in the east...any ideas?

Another groundcover for CA that is pretty tough is pachysandra. Foliage year round, no significant flowers. I have foxtail asparagus fern ( no berries) and common wood violet as ground covers also. All three are pretty doodle tough. All of mine are fairly wll extablished. Most things will need to be protected until they are established. Wood violet is shade tolerant, doodle tolerant, does not need to be protected until established. It does, however, go dormant in the winter. Also some people consider it invasive. I just think it is a great groundcover. Mondo grass is also a great shade ground cover but can be difficult to establish. Once really started it is iron clad and my doodles don't eat it and they eat almost everything.
I love pachysandra because it's evergreen, it spreads, perennials can come up through it and it hides fallen leaves. I could go on and on--oh, I did: ) But, the doodles have certainly torn up one bed of it with there catch me if you can game. Oh, well, I don't think anything short of concrete could survive on a favorite doodle shortcut.
