Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

i just joined this group but have had multiple dogs for awhile now. We have Barkley (a schnoodle), Gracie (a Labradoodle), and a new Goldendoodle puppy - yet to be named.

We brought the puppy home last night. Gracie seems a bit jealous, but I know we are projecting our feelings on to her actions. Gracie just turned a year old.

How long before she adjusts to the new one? I really didn't want to cause a commotion, but she barks and paws at the puppy. I know that technically Gracie is still a puppy too. We have been giving Gracie her own time without the puppy. The puppy is a bit timid, but I've seen her try to paw at Gracie - usually a swap in the air. I've seen her "snap" at Gracie too. Lol
The puppy is very sweet, but a bit scared of Gracie (standard size). She likes Barkley though and Barkley doesn't seem to mind her, but he didn't like Gracie as she was a lot more rambunctious when she came home.

OMG your baby is so cute! I think the adjustment periods probably depend a lot on the dogs personalities. Loki is my velcro dog and he is exactly 1 year older than Moose who is very very independent. So when I first brought Moose home, he was typically off doing his own thing and would only occasionally come over for attention where as Loki was always by me. I think because of that I never noticed any jealous issues.

I would say however that when they did play, I thought they were killing each other. They were very vocal, rough, and I had never seen two dogs play that hard with each other. I did notice though if Moose every yelped Loki would back off right away. Usually Moose would only yelp if Loki was putting him in his place too. They still play like this with each other but now that they are the same size it isn't so scary. Loki would put Moose's face in part of his mouth is Moose got too nippy but Moose never yelped (if he did Loki backed off immediately) so I assume this is some unspoken way of setting rules. I also remember Loki would kind of "charge" at Moose and if Moose rolled over onto his back in a submissive way Loki would stop but if Moose stood his ground and took paw-swipes at him Loki would knock him over and make him roll on his back. Moose also snapped and Loki, we always joked that we had bought an alligator not a puppy because they were very big and loud "chomps". They both will still do that to each other.

I think I finally noticed them having more of routine and less tension when Moose was around 4 months old. I think at that point Loki had established rules and boundaries and Moose was compliant with them. Moose still tries to challenge Loki all the time but Loki doesn't seem like he cares anymore. Hope this helps!

Thanks!

We decided to call her Jade.
Anyway, I think Gracie is confused since she's been doted on for the past year. I mean we have Barkley, but he's older and is like, meh whatever. lol however, Gracie and Jade played tug with a rope. Jade was not going to let go and Gracie tried to take off with her. We had to tell her gentle and she actually stopped pulling so hard. So at least that's a start. Gracie paws at her and Jade goes and hides under a a chair at the dining room table, but still tries to play with Gracie or Jade will run to our lap when she's had enough. I'm sure it will all work out.
Just a little update - it didn't take long at all for the two to become buddies. They both pick on each other now. We just were vigilant and still are when they play as both of them like to grab a hold of one another's collar!
Now, if Mr. Grumpy Barkley would be a little more playful. But I guess for an old man he's doing good. :D
