Has anyone given their pup Bully Sticks? From what I've read online, they are supposed to be very good in terms of not splintering, etc. I'm just wondering if they are safe or recommended for young puppies to satisfy their chewing/biting needs and if that might be an appropriate substitution for our skin?
Our trainer, when we were in puppy classes, told us that her dog also broke a tooth on a Nylabone. We give Toby bully sticks, and he thinks they're wonderful!
We haven't tried bully sticks yet (I read where some dogs got diarrhea from them so I instantly crossed them off my list!) I did buy some cow hooves, based on the recommendation on a puppy preparation list. Gave one to Wrigley as I tried to brush her. It worked like a charm. Until I smelled it!!! OMG. I started gagging and had to take it away from her before I threw up! I disposed of the entire bag. Oh icky icky icky. Maybe I'll look for the odor free Bully sticks.
Cow hooves are Toby's favourite thing! I buy Rollover brand, made in High River, Alberta. The filling doesn't upset his tummy, and the hoof itself lasts a long time. A brand new cow hoof can buy me an hour of time! I am thinking of trying pig ears by the same company. He doesn't do well with pork fillings, but these don't have any filling in them. I've been told never to buy white, bleached out rawhide by my breeder.
Holly just loves Bully Sticks and we do buy them online where they are considerably less expensive. In fact we are waiting for a large order right now.
The price of an order of Bully Sticks is well worth it in that it seems to keep Holly from chewing on items which she would select as an alternate. A table leg or the sofa is a LOT more expensive than any number of Bully Sticks.
The only Cavaet with these sticks is that we need monitor them and take them away from Holly when they are small enough to fit entirely in her mouth in order to avoid the chance of her choaing on them. We then recycle them for our four Maltese who also love Bully Sticks. They especially like them when Holly has softened the sticks up for them.
The sticks also keep teeth clean and breath fresh.
THEY HAVE BEEN OUR PUPPIES BEST FRIENDS SINCE THEY WERE ABOUT 12 WEEKS OLD! the only problem now is that our pet store told us there is a shortage right now?? Anyway, make sure you know where they are coming from (USA is best) and see if you can get hormone-free beef.
I've been using Bully Sticks with Sandy since he was 12weeks old. For anyone enduring the mouthing of the Doodle these are great. I did not have an odor with mine or any staining. His breath is another thing. They are much better than raw hide. Sandy is my 4th pup and the others had raw hide because I did not know about Bully Sticks. One caution from my vet--be sure to buy US Bully Sticks.
The Moo brand is definitely odorless. Most of the higher quality bully sticks come from Brazil (I think) and they should be preservative-free. I now buy them on ebay (much cheaper). If you want the source, email me directly.
