Lucy turns 5 months April 6th and is scheduled for her spay on the 7th. Any suggestions/advice on what to expect the first few days home? We have a comfy cone for her, and of course her crate to keep her quiet for short periods of time, but I wonder just how much the crate will help when she really wants to get out and MOVE. She's an active girl. Thanks for any/all input.
Zoe was spayed the same day. They sent her home with pain meds. I gave her half like my instructions said. She is 6 mo old and weighs 42 lbs. The doc said she likes the way I am keeping her lean. She also told me Zoe shouldn't run, jump, or play for 10 to 14 days. I tried hard not to burst out in laughter. Keep a doodle still for 2 weeks?!?!?
Well its been not even a week and she jumps on our high bed, the couch, plays with Shea out toy poodle and tries to run on her lead during potty breaks. So far luck has been with us. Though her stitches are on the inside as well. She has only licked at her stitch area twice and it was short and brief. So, I guess I can say she is well. I do crate her during the day.
Problem though, seems like she pees more now. I am only gone about hours total and she has accidents in her crate which makes her all yucky and stinky, so I have to wash her down with a wash cloth as the vet said no bathing as well. any suggestions about the massive wanna pee issue???
Well, I'm afraid I can't help with the pee issue. Lucy doesn't seem to be peeing more since her spay. I thought the idea of keeping Lucy basically non active was laughable as well. She, too, has jumped on our bed, run up and down the stairs with the 'zoomies' and jumped like there's no tomorrow. We've tried our best to keep her activity level to a minimum, but you know how that goes! My vet said no forced exercise or rough housing for 7 days, not 2 weeks! Lucy's stitches are doing well, and her energy level has returned to normal. I'm planning on taking her to a puppy romp on Sunday, so I sure hope by then she'll be in the clear to romp again. She's not a rough housing kind of girl, but prefers to play 1-on-1 with smaller pups with lower intensity levels. She doesn't like being chased and pounced by dogs her size one bit at all. So I'm not too concerned about that. The facility I take her to has 3 separate areas for different sized puppies and different energy levels. She's remained in the same area for the last 2 months, when other dogs have 'graduated' to the higher intensity-level group.
I plan on giving her a bath on Thursday. Guess I should check with the vet to make sure that's okay. Her surgery site looks very good with just a little redness along the incision line.
Hope Zoe's urination problem resolves on its own. You might want to check with your vet on why that is occurring after her spay.
One last thing. It just occurred to me that increased or more frequent urination could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. I'd check with the vet on that just to rule it out.
She's been fine the last 2 days, so I am hoping it was just her system getting back in check. Her bowels have become more active once again too. Thankfully her food doesnt make her have huge stool!
Good luck with the bath! I can't wait to give Zoe hers. She needs one badly!
That's good to hear Zoe is better. The bath was a no-go. I checked with Lucy's vet and he says to wait 14 days. That will be the longest she's ever gone without a bath, I think...
I plan to give Lucy a bath on Monday. Its just a couple days short of 2 weeks, but I can hardly see her incision line now, so I don't see any good reason to wait. And of course, she's been doing all those other forbidden activities for at least a week without any harm.
