Going to get the pup next weekend!!! Just wondering if anyone had a long drive with their puppy when they 1st picked it up, and what would be the best things for me to have on hand in the car? I am anticipating the ride to be about 8-9 hours. I plan on setting up an area in the back of the car w/ pee pads, bringing some towels...what else should I bring? Didi anyone have to deal w/ vomiting on the way home? Are there any suggestions for that? Should I bring a few toys, or do they still sleep a lot at 8 weeks? I AM SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!
I just picked up our puppy this last Monday. We only had a 40 minute drive, but we brought towels, paper towels, wet wipes, a plastic bag (to put dirty paper towels), and the CD "While You Are Gone: Music Pets Love". Never needed the towels or wet wipes (no vomiting or accidents), and Lucy slept in my lap (in the back seat) all the way home. My biggest suggestion is the CD. It really IS beautiful music and it just lulled Lucy to sleep. I use the CD a lot at home too. Its made crate training a real breeze. It relaxes her and she barely fussed the first time I used it when she went into her crate (awake) the first time. Now, I don't even need the CD to get her to sleep in her crate. She willingly goes in and lays down and just falls asleep. I can't recommend the CD highly enough. Buy it. You can find it on Amazon.com or Ebay. You'll thank me for it later :-)
One more thing... I see Ellen suggested rubbing a stuffed toy against the littermates, and that may help. What I found helped even more (as the breeder had given us a stuffed animal with mom's odor on it), was stuffed animals with OUR scent on it. We slept with 2 stuffed animals the night before picking Lucy up, and she was comforted by those animals more than the one the breeder supplied. The reasoning is that YOU are the puppy's NEW pack and your scent will be the most important one your puppy will ever know. Good luck and have fun! Its a real joy ride having a new puppy!
