Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

There are so many situations that lead to giving up a pet. Some are understandable somewhat, some just don't make any sense at all. Since most of us here have a dog someone else gave up, we are getting the love and devotion they are missing. I'm sure your dog in some way says to you, " Thanks for giving me a second chance!"

i don't know why Morgan was dumped at the shelter, they didn't have any info but on various papers they called him "bearded collie" & "shetland sheepdog" when he doesn't look like either. he wasn't neutered & apparently the mats were so bad they shaved him like a marine recruit. when i met him at the shelter he immediately did the standing "doodle drape" somehow wrapping himself around my legs like a cat...:) when we all got home (wyatt earp (male corgi), calamity jane (beagle/corgi - RIP) & the now called morgan earp...we had some issues...lol. morgan was glued to me & wyatt DID NOT like that, i was HIS & he had every intention of letting morgan know it...:) we still have warnings & he blocks morgan from getting too close to me sometimes but we're learning. the tail was an adjustment for all of us...LOL (fyi - corgis are docked) he wacks us all with it (the corgis get it right in the face...:), it stirs up the cold air, he knocks things over, etc...lol
The story I was given about my Sophie was that the lady who owned her moved to an apartment and could not take her. So she was dumped at the mom's home. The mom's home was not big enough so she went from an inside dog to an outside dog. The temperatures were frigid when I saw the ad. Even though I did not get her from a shelter or a rescue organization, she really did need to be rescued. When I went to see her there was no way I could leave her behind. She was horribly matted, nasty, stinky and was kept in a small chain link pen. Despite all this, she was so happy and loving and totally irresistable. She is THE most lovable and wonderful dog I have ever met. I am so grateful to have found her.
I'll never understand that "house isn't big enough" thing. Could the dog not fit through the door? How big does a house have to be to accomodate a dog bed and a couple of bowls?
You absolutely rescued Sophie. Congratulations on finding her!
I totally agree, Karen. And after we lost our wonderful Clay we definitely found that size is not the issue, for us, it just wasn't a home without a sweet dog. Sophie has brought so much happiness even in just a few short weeks.
Clancy joined our family on March 25, 2010. What I know so far is that Clancy was in a kill shelter in a neighboring town. He was either abandoned or turned in by his family. When he was put on the 'kill list' our local humane society took him. The local humane society took him to a fund raiser where Ned and I met him. According to the humane society he was on Petfinder but he wasn't. I posted here and the other doodle websites so someone who was a doodle person could get him. Guess we were those doodle people! According to the humane society, Clancy was chipped so we know his birthdate - 3/17/2008 which is Ned's birthday also! The chip information also lists him as a labradoodle.
What I also know is that Clancy was loved, loved, loved. He takes more after the lab gene pool - not as smart as Ned but a big affectionate, clumsy doofus. He loves people, rides really well in a car, behaves perfectly in public crowds, is not aggressive, and walks nicely on a leash as long as he has a corrective collar. He does not know simple commands which we are working on.
His second day with us we met Nancie Casey and Graciedoodle at an outdoor car show where Clancy was admired and petted by people of all ages. Today we took him to the marina where a boy jumped off his bike rushed over to pet and wrestle with Clancy. It was amazing to watch. Clancy calmly went along with the whole thing!
So glad you and Clancy found each other! I peaked in on your page at his picture ( he is really a big beautiful guy).
Sounds like he will be a great companion for you and Ned too. Congratulations!
Thank you Susan. He really is a treasure. Even if he was an owner surrender - how could they do that to a dog that obviously was loved by them?? I can't believe they would not have friends or family standing in line to take him.
One of the great mysteries. I wonder that about Jack's former owner every day.

Our Sadie was rescued by a somewhat local rescue from a kennel that breeds dogs for pet shops, then when they cannot sell a litter and they get "old" (4 months), they would take the litter and find them homes. Aparently they often got Labradoodles and Goldendoodles from this same place. We found her on PetFinder amazingly enough and was one of the 7 applications taken out of 65! We wanted our Doodle in the worst way! Our Sadie was the smallest, quietest, and bow legged of the bunch, but she is a happy, loving, sweet member of our family forever now!

Wow, I'm so thrilled to have found DK, and a group of fellow rescuers.  It seemed like most of the doodles I'd read about on this site had come from breeders.  The story we were told was that Chili was abused for the first two years of his life before coming to IDOG.  The family who had him for the following two years loved him, but Chili didn't care that there was an invisible fence, and would run right through it.  As a result, they had him tethered whenever outside, which was often.  We found him on PetFinder and went through the IDOG adoption process.  When we went to meet Chili, he was very timid and really didn't want anything to do with us.  He'd take a treat from my hand, but then immediately  back off.  His parents said that it took him a very long time to warm up to new people, especially men;  I'm sure due to the monster who originally had him.  He wouldn't let us even get close enough to touch or pet him, even after an hour.

I thought that was then end of it, that Chili didn't like or bond with us at all.  A few days later, however, his owner called to see if we still wanted to take Chili to our home to see how he'd do with our cat.  I was surprised to hear from him, since I felt like the first meeting did not go well at all, and I nearly declined his offer.  I'm so thankful that I didn't.  I picked up Chli around 10, with the agreement that I'd bring him back a few hours later.  I could not reach anyone at his home until about 7:30 PM, and was told to just keep him overnight to see how he behaved.  Chili has never left.  That was last March and he was "family" within a week.  He was no longer timid or jumpy after a couple of months of socialization.  There has not been even one day that I've regretted adopting him.  He is just the best (I know... that's what we all say about our doodles).  In fact, we are looking to add to our doodle family, so if anyone out there knows of one in Indiana in need of rescue, please let me know.

Sounds like Chili has found his FOREVER home!  Lots of Doodle Kisses to you Becky!
Thanks for the Doodle Kisses.  Your kids are so cute.  Love the way the Zeke and Lily "bookend" Jasper.  Let this be an early Happy Birthday to Jasper, because Chili and I don't know how to do all those fun Blinge things, and probably still won't by the 19th!
