This school year has been very difficult, just one of those years when moral is low in our building. Has anyone else experienced a year like that and what did you do to make it through the last few weeks? It has been a tough year for me co-teaching with a teacher that isn't real thrilled have special ed students in the room, let alone a special ed teacher in there all day. Next year I will have my own classroom and not co-teach, which I enjoy doing when the teacher wants you in there.

I think this is just wonderful. What a nice way to end your day and the students' day too.Cirrus and Nimbus probably enjoyed it immensely.

Hi everyone. My "It's a dogs life" class is off to a great start. Friday before last Nimbus and Cirrus came to school and each child had to safely greet each owner and dog. Then last Tuesday, we had a guide dog puppy raiser come and bring a career change guide dog (one who didn't make the cut). She talked to the kids about raising puppies for guide dogs. Next week we have a vet and a dog trainer coming. Between speakers we are currently creating a book about different dog attributes. We also are watching NATURE the rise of the dog. The kids are loving it! I get to end my day each day doing this... it is great.

Cindy, I have heard really good things about Kansas' education system. My husband and I just watched a video demonstrating how well your English Language Program works.

Nancy, our principal used to teach Gifted, so he does have an understanding of the special education needs. I hope our new program will work next year, it should!! Our school district is the largest in our state, principals are given the opportunity to put staff where they belong which does help a great deal. It should be interesting next year, I wish Mandy were old enough to go to class with me.

Ask your students. Tell them there is a program where they can have dogs come into the classroom to visit and they can read to the dogs. Ask if they might like this. Make no promises, but see what they say. I'm guessing the lower readers would be in favor of it.

Lynda, that is exactly the program I was considering training my doodle in before I was transferred. I currently teach remedial middle school students, 6th-8th grade students who are on a 2nd-7th grade reading level. Naturally, the students are absolutely mortified to be in my class (even though I try my hardest to make it fun) because it is known as the "stupid class". Do you think the program would be appropriate for middle school students as well?

Cindy, Your new program does sound like the kids will actually get more appropriate instruction (WHAATTTTT! - for the kids?) at their levels. I am shocked that your principal has the authority to do some program design. I am in a fairly large district and everything must be exactly the same from school to school and, heaven forbid!, if we put the kids in tracks according to ability/achievement. Aren't they all college bound????

If writing is involved, you could copy on a non-color printer just using regular copy pape - some of your pictures of Nimbus and Cirrus - especially silly ones, as a story starter for the adventures of ........ for fiction. Or they could make a book involving safety, the visitors etc. Wouldn't it be fun for them to make a collage of the pictures from the "dog show?" My students have fallen in love with Ned and think he is famous because he is on real calendars, so I have printed some of his silly pictures (on a swing etc) on my classroom printer and used them to make award certificates.

I mentioned earlier that I will be teaching a dog "enrichment class" starting on Tuesday . One of the first things I do is talk about dogs safety. Nimbus and possibly Cirrus will visit next Friday. Each kid will
need to safely approach and bet the dogs. The following week a vet is visiting. Other speakers I have arranged are a search and rescue person, a blind person with their seeing eye dog, and a K9 and police office and a trainer. We will study basic dog anatomy, dog evolution, dog care . Each kid (4-8) graders will choose a breed to research and present with the class. We end the class with a dog show! The kids bring their dogs to school and the kids with no dogs are the judges. This class is a blast! Let me know if you can think of any other fun, interesting activities or speakers you think I should have.
