Lynda this program sounds great. I teach fourth grade so, I do not have beginning readers. I would like to see if my district is interested though. I also wouldn't mind training my dogs to do this.

Some of you might be interested in a program we have here in Salinas. It is called Paws to Read. Beginning readers have therapy dogs who come into class for them to read to. Students who might be reluctant to read to another person, always feel very good about reading to a dog. Great use of therapy dogs in education.

Currently I am working with a regular ed teacher all day. We have special ed students in the room with reg ed. Last 2 years I had a resource room for language arts and social studies, these students were at least 2 grade levels behind and most were 3 or mor. The self contained students at our school would be nonreaders and/or emotional/behavior disabilities that would prevent them from being in the next level of resource or inclusion with reg ed. Our principal is renaming our levels: class with a class (CWC) special ed with reg ed students (one reg ed teacher, one special ed teacher); transitional class (resource room but the students are higher level and are working to move to CWC; resource room these students are nonreaders to low readers and are not ready to move to transitional they need more structure, smaller classes. There will 4 resource teachers, one for each core class and that teacher will instruct all 3 grade levels. We are looking forward to this change, since the students will move to another teacher, instead of having the same kids all day (less stress on both parties)

Oh how fun, Cindy! I originally thought about training my goldendoodle in the READ program since I currently teach remedial reading in middle school, but as I was essentially transferred to high school next year, I don't think it would be a good idea, now. Or at least, not to bring to work with me. (High school kids are much too cool for dogs, dontcha know...) Anyway, I do hope all goes well for you. Keep us updated on how you both are doing.

Hi Cindy, What is the difference between what you are doing now in middle school sp. ed and what you will be doing? In Ca. middle school Special Day and Resource students are lumped together in classes and move from class to class. Students with more severe disabilities are in self contained classes.

Hello! I am a special education teacher in a middle school. Next year I will be teaching resource (self-contained) language arts 6, 7, and 8th grades. OUr school is therapy dog friendly and the past 3 years I have planned on getting a puppy to train and bring into my classroom. I finally decided on a labradoodle, was leaning towards lab, but the shedding was a problem for me. I came across this bred and thought it was perfect! Mandy will begin puppy classes in a couple of weeks and then continue her training until she ready to be with me at work. I know I will love having her with me every day.

It is spring break and we are without our dogs and I miss them soooooo much. :( we are visiting relatives in Arizona and they were invited but I was afraid it would be too much. We have my 86 year-old mom and her dog with us. I hope you all are resting and having fun.

Great idea, Karen, to change the name of this group to something more inclusive. Yes, it is great to be on Spring Break. I have absolutely nothing planned for ten days (except maybe a doodle romp). Are you planning to go to the San Jose romp?

Happy Spring break to all of you! Enjoy your families and your doodles!

Karen you will have to make a discussion or blog or whatever to keep us up on your dog enrichment class - take pictures too.
Krista, if you ever have any teaching questions you don't want to ask of your peers, you can post it here and there seems to be enough teaching experience years to come up with some unique or real world answers.
Lynda, you are certainly in an enviable position - retired - just where I want to be in 2 years.
Tamara, your job sounds enviable - our littlest kids are such treasures; so fresh and free.
Jackie, welcome - you may not have the official credential but you are a teacher. I have a teaching assistant and couldn't run my program without her.
Debbie, you certainly varied your teaching experience; my husband and I have done that also.
