There are just so many choices of foods and I have fed Murphy the older doodle mostly Wellness Core or Orijen with about 50% home cooked foods. Now that we have Bella, 6 months old who came from the breeder on Fromm, I wanted to get them both on the same food for convenience and storage issues. Having 2 30-40# bags of different foods around is too cumbersome.

So they are both on Canidae ALS now and doing fine however, it has never been one of my first choices before and I am questioning if it is the best choice. Am I doomed to buying 2 different bags for different ages for another 6 months? And what is the soonest I can change the puppy to adult food?

Hope Karen is out there today....help! And Thank you.

Sue, why can't they both be on Fromm? It's one of our favorite foods, (we helped April choose it, lol).
My thinking was that she needed puppy food for about 12 months and he is on adult food. 2 bags of different foods again. Or is Orijen adult food okay for her now?
She won't need the puppy food for a full year. They can usually switch to adult formulas by about 8-9 months old. I'd ask the vet, they don't know much about the particular foods themselves, but they do know about weight gain & growth.

Most of the Fromm foods are ALS. We love it and have been feeding several of the varieties to all three of our doods-- ages 4, 3, and 1-- for several months. Our youngest just turned 1. I give Fromm 2 HUGE thumbs up!

I will be curious as to what Karen has to say also. The vet wants to change Izzy over to adult Orijen after she is spayed at around 6 months. She is gaining at least a pound a week right now. Lucca is on the adult Orijen so for me, it works but what about the benefits or drawbacks to the puppy:)?

Have you asked your vet why he/she feels Izzy should go to adult food now? Is she a mini? If so, her skeletal growth would be near complete at 6 months.

Izzy is a medium and will most likely get to around 50 lbs.if the x2 at 16 weeks rule applies (I prefer not to add the 10..that's too big..lol). She was 22 1/2 lbs at 15 weeks. She (the vet) feels that going on the adult formula will slow it down? Maybe Izzy is getting too much protein on the Orijen? I haven't really gotten into it with her as I still have time. I just wanted to get input from this group first.

She isn't getting too much protein in the Orijen, we've talked about that here many times. The puppy food is more nutrient and fat dense than the adult food, so that might be the reason...but it would have more to do with not gaining too much weight too fast than her overall size.

The Orijen adult has 20 k/cal less per cup than the puppy food, 3% less fat, and 2% less protein.

That must be it but I will ask her. Bottom line is that it's ok to do, right? I think I started Lucca on adult food at around 8 months
It's fine IMO, and you are very welcome. :)
Oh, and thanks:)
Sue, I just reread your post, and I think what you're saying is that you had Murphy on a grain-free food and would like to continue with that, but don't want to feed two separate foods, i.e., adult Orijen for Murphy and puppy Orijen for Bella. Is that right?
