Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
After reading through Darla's discussion I wondered about "gunky eyes". Ever since we got Charlotte (2 - 2 1/2 yr old) - about 4 months ago I've had to clean her eyes 3-4 times a day. It never occurred to me that it might not be normal. Is there a normal?
Thanks,
Wendy

Dogs do get matter in their eyes, that's normal; however, if there is that much that you need to clean her eyes 3-4 times a day, that seems excessive. What color is the matter?
Although everyone wants to blame food for every health issue, food is most likely not to blame for this. I would ask the vet about it.
It's black. I will ask the vet - thanks, Karen.
Black is normal. :)
Forest gets that crusty, sleepy eyes all the time...I clean them at least 3-4 times per day and was told that was normal with the Labradoodles by my breeder. He did have red eyes once, which then I took him in and the vet put him on antibiotic drops for 7 days. Forest's gunk has been bright green, dull green and yellow. It's definitely annoying to constantly be cleaning out the corners of his eyes all the time! Ugh.
Green or yellow discharge from the eyes is a sign of an infection. :(
Hmmmm..maybe I need to put Forest on a grain free diet?? He eats Candidae now, but it's not the grain free one.
Well then he always has had an infection since he was 8 weeks old! You would think he would be really sick by now? But, there is no redness. It's just these little crusties all the time...not tons of goop running down his face. So, still doesn't' make sense to me that they would be infected??
No, it doesn't make sense to me either.
I have been shocked at how my dog's eyes have been crusty and gunky since I got her.
But it's usually just in the morning. There is the dried crusty stuff as well as the more snot like stuff.
I asked my holistic vet about it one morning when I took her in for something else and I didn't clean it before we went in. She didn't seem concerned about it.
I find myself cleaning it every morning, and I just know my last dog didn't have this issue...
All my dogs have been poodles or poodle mixes and all have had a little debris in their eyes, usually in the morning. So do I when I wake up.
But it's a teeny little bit of stuff. Just a tiny dot. Not crusty, not mucus-y.
This discussion is probably more appropriate for the Health Group than the Food Group, lol.
