I have always fed my adult dogs twice a day.
Three times a day here (plus bedtime snack) to keep their stomachs from being empty because they both vomit bile otherwise. They get a light breakfast and lunch and a heavier supper, and then normally a piece of dehydrated lamb lung or similar when we go to bed.
Okay, I'll admit it, they're a tiny bit spoiled. ;-)
Bailey has dry food available at all times as she free feeds. I do give her a special breakfast treat of a hard boiled egg yolk and she gets a dinner treat of a bit of cottage cheese. Of course if we are home at lunch she will get a few baby carrots too! We have always done free feeding and she has never had a problem. I honestly do not know how much dry food she eats in a day because my husband just makes sure there is always food available in her dish. She has been eating this way since she was 6 months old (when we got her) and she has never had a weight problem. She is two years old now.
Twice a day for me too - first thing in the morning and at 5pm. My doodles have a lighter breakfast because one doesn't seem as hungry then.
I know the old rule from when I was a kid was just to feed a dog once a day. I think dogs can deal with this but I also agree that having food spread over the day seems healthier. Maybe we are just thinking like humans? I do know my dogs always appreciate meal time so I don't mind having it twice a day.
Nope, it's not just thinking like humans. There are physiological reasons why it's better for dogs to eat twice a day instead of once. :)
Twice daily - about 6:30 am (8 on weekends) and 4:30 pm.
Wow! Thank you all so much for your input. Twice a day it is!
Add me to the twice a day group. Snickers doesn't always eat or finish his breakfast. I'll just top off what's left to make a full serving at dinner time. I don't give him a full serving in addition to what he has left.
I too have always fed my dogs twice a day.
