Hi Barbara, How are you and Stanley doing? Kashmir is Stanley's sister. Then there is sister Luxie (with Cathy) Do you know anyone else that have the other sisters? You are only a couple hours away. We should meet up sometime to get the siblings together.
I did tons of questioning on DK in the Grooming Group before I bought my stuff. A couple of the members are professional groomers. When you read through all the stuff there is a link to a video posted on YouTube which is a great teaching aid. The video is what gave me the courage to finally do it myself!!! You can also just Google dog grooming, goldendoodle grooming, etc. I also Googled for the best price on all my grooming stuff. I use the Oster 2-speed Golden A-5 clippers. Make sure they are for animals and not humans and that you get the US and European voltage. I also use the #10, #15 and #40 blades and I ALWAYS use the plastic attachments (combs). You buy them in a set and they snap on over the clipper blade. These are a must if you want to keep some hair on your Doodle!!!!!! I bought the scissors based on what I could afford. They can go up to $300 or more!! I use a large (6 - 7") curved scissor, thinning shears and the little blunt tipped. I also use the Bamboo rotating tooth comb. I can't find them in the stores anymore so I order them through Amazon. Gracie has a wavy fleece coat and it is very soft and not dense and thick. Others on DK like the Andes clippers with all the blades/attachments. I don't think it matters as long as they are pet grooming clippers. So far I have been very happy with my equipment. I also got a grooming table when there was a huge sale. It has really saved my back and it keeps Gracie disciplined when she is on it. I don't need to hook her up to the arm/tether...she just stands there. I think that pretty well covers it. Just read all the stuff on DK and you should be pretty well knowledged by the time you finish. Also, tons of Googling!!!! Good Luck...Kristen at Maggies Farm can also advise you and she was the one who ordered a dematting tool for me. Tell her Hi from us when you see her again.
I now do my own grooming but for almost 2 years Gracie went to Maggie's Farm down on Rosecrans Street. Kristen is the owner and groomer. I am not sure she allows you to stay and watch. Usually Gracie would be there for 4 hours or more. The reason they don't want you to stay is because the dog will "act out" and want to be with you. By the time I started doing Gracie myself she was totally disciplined to holding still and tolerating the grooming which is tedious. I am sure if I had attempted when she was a toddler, things would not go as smoothly as they do now. You can call and ask her. Next time you are at Pet Co or PetSmart you might want to stand at the grooming window and just watch them to get ideas how it is done. You also can get a ton of information from the "grooming group" here in DK.
As far as the fox tails, we were out of town and Gracie goes to the Alpine Dog Ranch which she loves. It was just a freak thing and I made the mistake of sending her with really long hair. I usually trim her up because she is in the water every day and then gets really dirty. She has a ball just being a dog. She has been there probably 6 times but this was the first time in the summer. The owners have never had this happen before but now they know to give Gracie paw checks every night before bed time. She is going back in October for 7 days but the fox tails should be gone. FYI...fox tails are everywhere. You don't have to look very far. They can be in your neighbor's yard or out on a walk anywhere where there are weeds and unkept yards. It is the season from late Spring through the Summer.
We live on Milan Street just off Chatsworth and Narragansett (by Dana Middle School). I used to take Gracie up to the college all the time and throw her ball down on the old girls softball field. I grew up on Fleetridge Dr. right by the fire station!!
