About Me:
Nelson-retired from GTE/Verizon and now working with a custom homebuilder. In his spare time he enjoys hunting and fishing as well as meeting new people. Jeanne-retired from American Airlines and enjoying staying home. My hobbies are photography, sewing and reading. We enjoy traveling and visiting with our grandchildren and children throughout the southeastern US.
Annie is our rescue labradoodle. The litter was dumped at a kill shelter in Abilene and fortunately a rescue agency was able to take them in. The mom that fostered Annie also fostered another of the puppies. She named the Eve and Noel. Eve is the one we were blessed with.

Our 14 yr old Airedale Newt died in October, 2012. We weren't planning on getting another dog for awhile. We talked at length about what kind of dog we would get eventually and had decided on a goldendoodle. I started looking at rescue sites. I'd always had rescues before however Nelson had gotten Newt from a breeder. One day in November the pictures of Eve and Noel popped up on a rescue site. I immediately filled out the application and then the waiting began. All through November and December the puppies pictures stayed on the site as though they were still available for adoption. I emailed the foster mom several times trying to get an idea as to whether we were even being considered. She would update me on the puppies yet not commit to anything else. The puppies went through quite a bit, first they had worms and fleas to contend with and just when they got them through that and were ready to release them to forever homes, the puppies developed a cough. The vet thought it might be Parvo from their stay at the shelter and wanted them kept at their foster home under his care until they were sure they would be ok. So they didn't get to go to their forever homes before Christmas as originally planned. By the time they were cleared from the cough it was only a week til they would be old enough to be spayed so it was decided to have them continue staying at their foster home. About this time they disappeared off the rescue website. The foster mom quit answering my emails and my heart sank. I figured they had chosen the forever families and we weren't one of them. Back to the drawing board looking for another doodle rescue. We made an appointment to see an older puppy in McKinney, Texas however on January 9, the foster mom of the original puppies sent me an email and asked if we were still interested in Eve. Did she have to ask?! I called her immediately and we made arrangements to pick up Eve on January 11 in Abilene (about 100 miles from here.) We met them at PetSmart and talked with them for quite awhile. They were a very nice couple who foster dogs often. Eve slept on my lap most of the way home. We didn't want to keep the name Eve yet couldn't think of another name. One of our daughters came up with Annie Oakley in homage to Nelson's love of the old west. When we tried the name out on her, her ears perked up so we knew that was a keeper name! The foster mom originally thought the puppies were goldendoodles however it turns out they are labradoodles. Annie is very smart. For instance when she fetches the ball and brings it all the way back to me (sometimes she seems to have ADD!) she gets a treat. If she doesn't bring the ball ALL the way back she doesn't get a treat. The other day I threw the ball then realized I was out of treats. Annie brought the ball to me and looked at me expectantly waiting for her treat. When I showed her I didn't have any she promptly picked up the ball and trotted away from me with it! One day I was taking the dried laundry from the laundry room to our bedroom. I had unknowingly dropped a sock. Annie picked it up and followed me into the bedroom and dropped it at my feet! The awesome thing is that she doesn't chew furniture, shoes or anything she's not supposed to except for tags on blankets and pillows! Otherwise she sticks to chewing on her stuffed toys or bones. She loves her squeaker stuffed toys and likes to play tug of war. Of course I could go on and on and bore ya'll to tears. I'm sure your special furbabies have their own amazing and amusing things they do to steal your hearts!
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Rescue
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
We have friends who have goldendoodles and they highly recommended the breed. We couldn't find a rescue goldendoodle however found several rescue labradoodles.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
She loves to run, fetch, snuggle and loves to have the wind blow in her face. I really wanted a dog that would walk with the neighbors and I in the morning and one who likes to ride in cars. Annie doesn't like either of those things! The amazing thing is that she will not leave our property! We have 5 acres of unfenced land and she stays within bounds. She has from day one, so we don't have to leash her to take her outside. In fact she won't stay outside unless one of us is with her. She won't walk in the neighborhood. She's ok with walking on a leash as long as we don't leave the property! She also does not like riding in a car. She lies on the back floorboard and whimpers much of the way. I've taken her to a park and once I got her out of the car (she tends to get as far away from the open door as possible) she was fine. She walked on her leash and had a good time exploring the park.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
Yes!
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
I brush her a couple times a week. We will take her to Petsmart for serious grooming

That's so great Jeanne.  I'm sure that helped put some of your fears to rest.  So glad to hear Annie did well :)

Hi Jeanne!  It's too bad Annie lives in TX.  We would have babysat Annie for you.  Roxy would've loved having a friend.  I'm sure the boarding will be more traumatic for you then Annie.  I'm sure she'll be in good hands.  I often think about getting Roxy a sister or brother too, but my two boys play baseball and I take Roxy to every game.  It's not easy carrying my chair, walking Roxy, carrying a bag of toys/treats to keep her busy, and keeping an eye on my one son who isn't playing baseball at the time (my husband is too into the game to depend on) that I think it would be too hard to have a 2nd.  Plus, my family usually watches her when we go on vacation and I don't know that they'd watch two dogs :)  We have a dog park about 2 miles away and there's a fenced in area at the baseball field where dogs can play so she has been getting her playdates in :)

We had a lab mix for 12 1/2 years.  Unfortunately we lost her to cancer in Sept.  I knew I wanted a low shedding, large dog for our next baby so I began the investigation into finding one.  After seeing pics and reading about Goldendoodles I was sold.  The next step was to find one that needed to be rescued.  I felt very strong about not going through a breeder and finding a dog that needed a home.  I would check Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet every day.  One would get listed, I would email / call and they would already be adopted.  So I realized I needed to step it up.  I started checking every hour or two.  What made it harder was, I really wanted a puppy.  My husband & I had gotten our last dog right after we got married so my boys weren't around yet to experience a puppy.   It was Nov / December and I had decided we would wait until after Christmas to get a dog because I didn't want to worry about the puppy getting into the tree and all the decorations, but I couldn't stop looking.  One Friday night we had gotten home from a friends house.  It was about 10:30 pm and I had decided to check the websites one last time before going to bed.  Low and behold there were 2 Goldendoodle puppies (8 weeks old) listed on Adopt-A-Pet in Ohio.  They could have only just been listed.  So I quick sent an email to the rescue.  The woman there quickly responded and said the puppies were still available.  I knew this was the one.  I filled out an application and emailed it right over.  It was probably 1 am by the time I was done and got to bed.  The next morning I had to run the store.  My husband kept stalking our email to see if we were approved.  Finally around 11 am we found out we were approved and to call to schedule the pick up.  The puppy was in foster care and the house was 6 hours from us.  I decided I would drive there myself on Thursday.  My husband would arrange his work schedule around getting the boys from school and I'd be back that night with the puppy.  I called to make the arrangements and the woman told me we had 72 hours to pick her up or we would forfeit the puppy.  Out of my mouth came - "I'll be there tomorrow!"  haha  The boys decided they didn't want to sit in the car for 12 hours so they stayed at their grandmom's while my husband and I made the trip.  Roxy (then Blondie) was so much more then I ever expected.  She was beautiful and I knew we had made the right choice.  Love at first sight :)

Hi Nelson, Jeanne  & Annie,

Annie is so cute.  I enjoyed reading how Annie came to be your fur baby.  I also rescued my fur baby and she is 7 months old as well.  They sound like they have a lot in common :)

Thank you very much for the welcome!  Salvador's a lot of fun and A LOT of work!  lol.  I still have 2 weeks left of school, so I've spent a little time feeling guilty to not give him a TON of attention.  But he's a good pup so far...lots of energy!

I know- I was thinking that about your Annie Oakley too :) they do look alike. So I'll be curious to how Holmes will  change. I've got it in my head that the 6 mos. mark is magic-- you'll have to let me know if it is for you. I'm just expecting to have all the potty training done (it is going well, we're at 12 weeks now) and teething done and hopefully he'll understand more commands... so I think! But it's been good so far.

I'm enjoying your pictures of Annie. Great how well you're able to capture her face & expression so well ;)

Welcome to DK! Annie is adorable! But I am biased towards black doodles :) Loved reading how you all rescued her. She's got a wonderfully cute face in your pics.

How can we not love these nerdy, goofy dogs as much as we do?!?  It's going to be fun watching Annie's coat change because I too think she will go more silver based on her muzzle color alone.  She's lucky you found her AND she found you!
