How is sweet little Izzy doing? Still improving, I hope?!
I meant look on the bag of the brand you are feeding now to see the calories per cup so you can compare to the new foods you want to consider.
Look on the bag. The grain free foods are higher calorie and usually more cost effective because you feed less and get the same amount of calories - of course in Izzy's case you might not feed less than now. Our Springer weighs 48- 49 pounds and his meal portion of Orijen is about 1 1/3 cups while our slower metabolism Clancy (at 64 pounds) gets only 1 cup. On a grained food those same calories would probably be 2 cups or more. If you just want to compare calories on different brands of food, you can google that food's home website and get the information. In the food group there is a list of foods that are recommended as the healthiest with links to their sites where you could see calorie counts.
I just reread your post and see that Izzy does eat. Could she have worms? I hope your child is doing better today. I think that I would go with a high calorie food for her.
I hope everyone at your house gets better quickly. We always worry when our dogs don't fit the 'norm' for everything, don't we. I think it is because they can't really tell us if something is wrong. Is Izzy a non-eater, picky eater or eats tons but doesn't gain weight? Ned historically is a non-eater. He isn't picky but he just doesn't eat at every meal. We feed our guys grain-free which is higher in calories - a good thing for Ned type dogs, and not so great for chow hounds like my Clancy.
Lisa, I am truly sorry that I offended you. Your question - which I knew was serious - just struck me as one of the unanswerable math problems we have to give our students. I thought my response was funny but with the next paragraph, I thought my questions would help you analyze your food situation and what you need to do to help Izzy gain weight.
Do you have any pictures of Izzy? Harvey looks gorgeous but not sure if your profile is Izzy or Harvey.
Hoping and praying that you get answers soon to Izzy's ill health. I'll be watching for updates.
