I am a brand new Doodle owner, and so far, am loving everything about the breed. Formally a poodle owner/lover I knew that the next best friend I would get would have to either be poodle or something very close. Phineas actually came to me by odd circumstance. My husband, who knew I was grieving the recent loss of my mini poodle, Shuggy, tried to surprise me on Christmas with a Maltipoo who looked all too similar to Shuggy. It was too hard for me and I knew that before I had a chance to get too close to the new pup, I brought him back to the store my husband purchased him at. *As a side note, normally I would never purchase from a pet shop, as I am aware of what they are infamous for (backyard breeding, puppy mills, etc...) but I had no choice in this case. The owner of the shop told me I could not return, but exchange for any other puppy in the shop. I spent hours looking at other small mini/toy breeds before a little honey-colored head popped up out of the wood shavings and looked at me through the glass. It sort of struck me then and there, I would bring this lovable, half-doped golden boy home as the new "family dog". Shuggy had always been "my" dog, as he was 100% devoted to me and watched my every move. I thought this new puppy would be the perfect addition to the family, and my husband had been wanting a big dog for some time now. I had also just the day before ran into the most beautiful mini Goldendoodle on the streets of NYC and inquired about where to find a good breeder, etc... so it seemed very fortuitous to say the least!
We brought Phineas home that very day and he slept for 2 days straight (I'm convinced the pet shop put tryptophane (sp?) in the dog food to make the puppies look at sleepy and cuddly). After he "woke up" he was such a playful little thing! Everyone fell in love with him. And he did amazing on the long overnight car ride down to Georgia (1000 mi) and you can't say that for many 3 month old puppies! I know we have a special dog here, and we are continuing to love him and train him and discipline him so that he grows up to be the best he can be. He is oozing with potential!
Great website-- I am glad I stumbled upon it by accident! Looking forward to checking it out during my free time and checking out all the pictures of other Doodles! It's very interesting to see the variation amongst all the different Doodles.
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
I have a 4 month old Goldendoodle named Phineas.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Pet store
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
I had a beautiful mini poodle who died tragically and I wanted another dog with some of his traits. Additionally, I have always loved Retrievers and my husband has been wanting to get a "big" dog for some time now. See "About me" for additional details on how I came to own a Doodle.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
Play in a large sand box, retrieve his rope knot, go for long walks with the baby stroller, go to the dog park, work on tricks.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
Nope!
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
Hasn't been groomed yet- next week will be first time!
Favorite Doodle Products?
Any hard plastic baby toys (i.e, keys and sippy cups)! So hard to separate baby- toys from Phineas-toys. He loves squeeky stuffed animals.
Hi Megan,
Hershey's coat did thicken up, once he stared loosing his puppy coat. He didn't get curlier though. But is coat is the texture of hair. Phineas has a beautiful coat, and is adorable. His coat will probably thicken up with his adult coat. And when they said it mats when they lose their puppy coat, believe it! It mats like crazy, but usually combs out with some leave in conditioner spray and a metal comb. Hershey is now 10 months, I don't think he's got his full adult coat in yet.
Enjoy your new pup! Oh, did you name him Phineas after the Disney show? I actually enjoy watching it with my daughter, I love the name.
