Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

A 12 week old golden retriever puppy (named Wally) joined our puppy class today and Oliver was absolutely smitten. He likes all of the other puppies in class, but he had a difficult time paying attention today since all he wanted to do was play with this other puppy that looked so similar to himself!

Our teacher decided to use Oliver for an exercise on how to teach them to walk on a loose leash (i.e. they don't PULL you, there is always slack in the leash). Although Oliver desperately wanted to play with Wally, he did AMAZING during this exercise and my heart swelled with pride (OMG! If I'm like this NOW I can't wait to see what it will be like when I have kids!)...In fact, the teacher was just as impressed as I was!

At first we had to teach him to sit without SAYING the word sit (which Oliver does when he wants a treat...he's done this since he was 8 weeks old). After that she tried to get Oliver to be distracted by Wally, but Oliver kept his gaze right on the teacher because he knew it was time to pay attention/get treats! It was really incredible how long he kept his gaze on her...he was SO focused...so good for such a young, little pup!

Anyway, after that came the luring while we walked which, again, Oliver was GREAT at! Since all of the other puppies were still working on the gaze part, our teacher told us to leave the classroom ring so that we could work on walking without distracting all of the other puppies. So for a good 30 minutes, we walked around by ourselves luring and teaching him to walk on a slack leash only. I'M SO FREAKING PROUD! Oh, I also exchanged contact info with Wally's parents so now we have a puppy playmate...hopefully we can meet at the park a few days per week to let them romp!

After our class, as we were leaving the training ring, there were tons of people and children waiting to see Oliver. I was heading toward the door to leave, but people said, "Oh! We've been waiting to see this one! Is it okay if we pet him?!" So of course I let Oliver continue to socialize. This trip to Petsmart was definitely monumental. Last week when we went to class he was a bit more quiet and not sure of his surroundings. This week we met an adult Great Dane, an adult Newfoundland, and had 4 people come up to me asking if he was a Goldendoodle! He was not shy AT ALL and had his tail going a mile a minute whenever someone was close enough for a sniff.

In other news, we have gone 4 days without any potty accidents in the house! Hooray! He's only pooped in the house once since we've had him (the day we brought him home-- our fault since we took him in the house after a long car ride, duh), so he's REALLY good about nudging the bell when he has to poop. But when it comes to peeing...Well, he'll be playing one minute and then sniffing/squatting the next almost in the same place (normal for puppies since play stimulates pottying!)....but over the past 4 days he's been able to hold it really well (5 hours!) and is telling us when he has to pee! This is amazing! I swear...I don't see how I could ever get another type of dog in the future! I LOVE MY DOODLE!
