18 weeks old, and 10 weeks in!
Hi everyone, and a special "Hi" to all Penny's fans who were dismayed at my announcement to discontinue the weekly blogs. So as I like to make people happy (to quote an American phrase: "I'm such a suck up"), I will continue as long as I can come up with enough subject matter to entertain you all...."Yay!" I hear you all cry...I hope so anyway!
Penny is a little over 4 months old now and we visited the vets on Tuesday for her last kennel cough shot, she weighed in at 32lbs, so from what I've read about the rule of thumb, at 4 months old, double the weight and add 5-10lbs and you should be in the ball park for her final weight, so that will be in the region 70-75lbs. Actually I don't care what size she finally reaches, but it is nice to speculate, and I have to admit that I am surprised, as her mom, a small Standard Poodle weighs in at 38lbs. From what I've read on this site though, that rule of thumb often goes straight out of the window, so we'll see.
Yesterday Penny and I attended our first puppy training class. Only two others turned up, which was better than the last time I tried 6 days previously when we were the only ones, maybe it's the economy? I turned up first, it was at PetSmart, so we chatted with the instructor for a while before we were directed to go and wait in the training area. So Penny and I dutifully went on our way and waited for the others. Jeri was going to come with me, but she's been so slammed with work recently and was still typing away when I left home. The next student to arrive was a young lady with a 6 month old Australian Shepherd, as she waited with me, her dog cried and yapped constantly. I let out some of Penny's leash so she could get closer to the noisy thing, but it wasn't interested in her, so I reeled her back in. I say reeled, but I don't use one of those silly flexi-leashes, just a six-foot nylon leash. Then the instructor came walking over and said "Is that Penny making all that noise?"....What a cheek! Just because she's really fussy when she meets strangers, she soon loses interest and calms down. Anyway both the Aussie's owner and I pointed at the Aussie, and I think the instructor was quite surprised...Hah!
Then the last of the students arrived, a teenage girl and her younger brother with a 7 month old Lab mix, mainly Lab though, and it was all over the place trying to get at everyone, and the girl had little control over the dog. So here's me with what is a notoriously high energy dog, younger and bigger than the other two, and she was the best behaved...Hah! again!
We didn't do much in that first class, just introduced to their methods, with a few demonstrations etc, but it was interesting and I'm looking forward to going further. The other thing that was funny was while the instructor was talking, the Aussie was still making a lot of noise, the Lab was still giving it's owner a hard time, and Penny just laid down, head sideways on the floor, ears all over the place, and her big fuzzy paw draped over my foot. The girl with the Lab said "Aaaah!" and the instructor looked down, laughed and said "Not a lot of stress going on is there?"...."Not so much!" was my reply. I'm really proud of her. Without trying, she showed everyone else up.....Muhahahaha!
You know, it's weird, I want to draw a portrait of Penny, and you'd think with all the photos I've taken so far, I'd have no problem finding the right pose, but I'm not finding the one that trips my trigger yet. Which is funny, because when I do them for other people, I just go from the photos I'm given...maybe I'm being too subjective, but I want it to be perfect...I'll keep trying!
Talking of photos, Penny has discovered a new way of asking to come in from the yard. She climbs on one of the patio chairs and stares through the window, see photos below:

Kevin did it ever occur to you that the other classes heard "a Doodle" would be in class and they chickened out...lol, (only joking). Awesome Penny you set good examples for other dogs to follow, love the pics, next time tell the dumb cat to go get help and let you in...lol.

Thanks Michele. Then there's always those other times when everything is reversed. My Bearded Collie Scruffy was so well behaved and so beloved by everybody that she went everywhere with us. On a visit to my Uncle's house once, he had just cooked a mighty lump of corned beef, and when his back was turned, Scruffy swiped it off the counter top. She'd never done anything like that at home or before. Then when visiting a friend who had refurbished their bathroom, we all went to see it, and on coming out we lost Scruffy....Where was she?....Drinking out of the toilet!

Way to go Penny! Isn't it great when they behave out in public? My two remind me of my kids when they were small - really good while out and about, really naughty when home! Great photos!
