We took Chester to the Vet for his first visit - with us as his Parents. We were like the nervous parents.. Asking lots of questions:
- His ears have dark spots and kind of stink ..Mites or wax or infection?/
- He seems to graze on grass is this ok??
- He is pooping 4-6 time a day is this normal??
-when do we start to groom..??
He was so good. We were so impressed. We weren't sure how he would act with other animals and a lot of different people coming and going.
It turns out he has an ear infection- The tech took swabs of both ears and looked under microscope- So I we had an inkling after reading others posts on DK. We got drops and ear cleaner. We were shown how to instill the drops and use the cleaner.
We also found out that he has a skin infection. (Staph).. and are giving him clavulin BID. He seems to be tolerating them ok. We are hiding it in a bit of cheese. He has been scratching a lot and we thought he just had a few little mosquito bites..or that it is natural for dogs to scratch a lot. :( He was scratching his ears and his belly.
We are new puppy parents and we felt like bad parents by not recognizing some infections.
The Vet was reassuring saying it wasn't uncomman..but we did feel like we had missed a couple signs.
Chester had his vaccines one needle and one intranasally.. Pretty neat..
He was really good and needed treat distractions during the ear cleaning and ear drops.
I think DH and I were more worked up about the visit then Chester. He sure was a star and I think that he will not be too nervous about going to the Vet next time.
We were there an hour and I think that the time spent with the Technician and the Vet was very valuable. They answered all our questions and concerns, and made both Chester and his parents very at ease.
Itwas a great experience.
