Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

This is my first blog on Doodle Kisses....this is a great place and I think I will be getting more time now to check it all out.....what has taken up my time? A new baby doodle.....we stumbled upon this site looking for a new puppy and a week ago today we brought her home.

Here she is.....her name is Wheezy:

She was born May 17, 2010........we drove 3 hours last Saturday to pick her up...and 3 hours back......what should have been a happy ride home was actually a nightmare....

When we arrived at the breeders home....she was just returning home from a soccer game with her children......she had us come in the garage and there was Wheezy.....somehow she was out of her cage along with another little dog.

The breeder picked her up and asked if it was ok to give her a bath....we said...that's ok....then she handed her in the door to one of her daughters and told her to blow her dry.....they took her into the bathroom and shut the door.

We talked and waited for what seemed forever......we paid for our new puppy and received our paper work......then the breeder went and got our puppy and insisted on clipping her toe nails!!!

That's when the nightmare started.....she not only cut her nail too short on one front paw....she cut a nail too short on the other one too!!! They both were bleeding terribly!!!

She gave me the puppy....and by that time.....our heads was spinning.....and we loaded our puppy in the car and drove away.

We had a 3 hour trip ahead of us with a little puppy with bloody feet....how sad!! I was glad I had a couple towels in the back to wrap her little feet in. We had only drove maybe a few miles....and we noticed our new puppy was not well.....she wheezed really bad!! And then after being so concerned with her toes bleeding....I realized we hadn't even seen her walk!!! We pulled over at the first place we could and let her walk around a little.....it didn't matter to me if she was sick.....I had already fallen in love with that little puppy. I realized something else as we traveled farther.....she had the worst breath....the odor could knock you down!!!

On Friday I had made an appointment at the vet to have her check out on Monday afternoon....and we worried all weekend.

Monday finally came.....and off to the vet we went.....her little heart checked out fine...no murmers...and her lungs they thought was ok...there was such a echo the vet said from her wheezing and trying to catch her breath.....and the breath?.....well our little puppy had the worst gum infection they had ever seen in a 3 month old puppy.....in older dogs, yes....but not a 3 month old puppy.....her teeth were broken...and her gums at the top had green pussy areas......it was horrible!!!

They immediately put her on medications and wormed her.....she has taken two pills a day and we have had to give her liquid medication with a syringe once a day.....she didn't like that!!! LOL

On to the happy ending......I took her back to the vet Friday.....and she is quickly getting a clean bill of health!!! Her breath smells like puppy breath....and her gums are rapidly healing!!! We are hoping that the infection didn't hurt the roots to her adult teeth......only time will tell......

She is the best little puppy!!! It has been circus here for the last week....Ellie is having a ball with her new sister......dog toys everywhere......running barking....playing hard. Today is the fist day they both have been relaxing.....finally!!!

I took this picture of Ellie the other day...and I thought she had the cutiest expression....

And here is a picture of Ellie and Wheezy together....

Our little doodle family is complete.....and I guess I felt I needed to blog our experience so others are aware and they look their puppies over better than we did.....that was the first time I have ever bought a dog over the internet from a breeder. Let the buyer beware is more than just a slogan. Just because you buy from a breeder is not guarantee you are buying a prefectly healthy dog.

I bet you have figured out how she got the name Wheezy......Butch started calling her that on the way home and the name fit.

This is Ellie and Wheezy resting as I write this.....they have bonded, relaxed and it looks like I'm going to have some of my computer time back!!

Hope everyone is having a doodle of a day!!

Hunter has a special fondness for any "merled" dog - these are her normal playmates - my best friend breeds and show shelties and specializes in blue merles - there is a lot to know when breeding with the merle gene and should be done very carefully! Wheezy is a doll! I have to show her picture to my sheltie friend :-)

I am thrilled to hear everything is on the right road!! Wheezy is just adorable!! and made herself right at home!

I learned something yesterday that I had no idea about tho others probably do
the merle gene is recessive - 2 merles breeding can cause blindness and deafness in their pups. I was just floored with that info. Guess an old dog CAN learn a new trick.

Thanks for giving Wheezy such a great home. Sorry to hear of what all of you have been through!

This "breeder" is actually a non-participatory member here on DK and has had complaints posted about her here, as well as elsewhere on-line.
Anyone who puts two intact dogs together for the purpose of making puppies could be called a "breeder". Puppy mills are breeding dogs, too. I could put twenty cages in my garage and call myself a breeder. But it's an insult to the good, reputable, responsible breeders here on DK and elsewhere to use the same term for someone who would allow a three month old puppy to get into this kind of condition. Buying on-line is okay when you know who you are dealing with, but research is important. We are very fortunate here on DK to have access to great advice and guidelines on about What To look For In A Breeder and i hope everyone who reads this blog will take the time to read these guidelines and learn from poor Wheezy's experience, and yours.
Wheezy is adorable and I'm glad she now has a good home and will get the veterinary care she needs.

I'm so glad that Wheezy is doing better, and what a horrible start for such a sweet puppy! Your pups both look so happy and content, I love it!

It certainly does sound like your little Doodle family is now complete! Thank goodness Wheezy found you, and she'll now have a happy and healthy life. Did your "breeder" ever even attempt to offer an explanation for what had caused all these health issues? Is the "breeder" going to have any accountability for the vet expenses? I'm so glad you have a puppy that you have already grown to love, but this is a horrible situation with the "breeder".

I agree with F. Parker. We all want healthy happy dogs bred by REAL BREEDERS. Many here have taken home puppies with life-long illnesses so we tend to stick together. When the next person asks about purchasing a puppy we are armed with knowledge to help others get healthy puppies and try to bury those breeders who are breeding puppies they don't care about. in it for the money and might be sick. If and when you decide to post this breeder we want to know.... we have a Dentist who would love to visit her. :)

Cute puppy. I am glad she is getting better. Do you know if her parents were merle? I agree with Joanne in that knowing where she came from would be very helpful. I would hope you could let us all know the name of the breeder if you feel comfortable with that. This breeder needs to find a day job!
