Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have had this blog written for a long time, but I did not want people to think Fudge was sick now. This happened shortly after we brought her home and goes to show that having a sick dog/puppy can be very scary. Since we have lots of new puppy owners, I thought it would be fun to share.
When Fudge was pretty small, she got sick. She stopped eating and drinking, was very lethargic, and I was beyond worried. Now, we all know if a child or puppy is going to get really sick, most of the time it happens after the doctor’s office has closed or on the weekend. Fudge was no exception. The more she wouldn’t eat or drink, the more upset I became and some would say, irrational. I was convinced Fudge was dying and my kids could not believe how I was acting. They will tell you I never coddled them as kids or got too worked up when they were not feeling well. I kept telling everyone we needed to go to the emergency Vet with Fudge before it was too late. My husband was not overly concerned and said she probably had a bug and we should just wait it out. WAIT IT OUT……when my baby was at death’s door? My youngest daughter insisted on reminding me that I had never acted very worried when she was sick and went on to tell her dad that the last time she asked me to feel her head to see if she had a fever, I said, “What do I look like, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?” I told her we needed to focus on our Fudge right now, and we could take a trip down memory lane another day.
Everyone thought we should wait, except me, so off we went to the after hours Vet clinic. We filled out the paperwork and when we went back to our room I told them that Fudge had gotten into my purse and I had found an empty gum wrapper. Bingo….now someone was taking me seriously. Sugar free gum can be very dangerous for a puppy, so they proceeded to run all kinds of tests, to rule out every possibility. We waited for a bit and when the vet called us back to discuss the results, she had good news and bad news for us. The good news was that Fudge’s tests all came back normal and she probably just had a stomach bug. The bad news was that information cost us around $700.00. As we left the office, my husband said, “Basically, we just got a $700 gas bill.”
How Could I Take a Chance with this Sweet Puppy??

Awe what a cute Fudge Puppy! Was this before or after you got Pet Insurance????
better safe than sorry is my motto!
Oh that is one adorable baby! Fudgie Wudgie, I understand completely why your DM insisted on taking you to the ER. I'm glad you didn't eat the sugar free gum. See, you were already such a good girl way back then!
Laurie - my mother had a motto - unless you were bleeding - you were fine. That proved to be almost true till the day I fell out of our tree house and my leg was bent at an unlikely angle. True there was no blood because the bone had only ALMOST poked through the skin. She was heartless. I sooo would have taken either of my boys in given the same situation - given my upbringing I over compensate - lol!!!!
Awwwww....Fudge is just adorable. You weren't irrational at all, Laurie. I would have done the same. Of course, maybe I'm irrational too.......nah. LOL
"What do I look like, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman?" LOL!!! That is SO something I would say!
The difference with kids and dogs, is once they are past the age of 2 or so, they can TALK! It's so much easier when you can say, "Is it your stomach? Does your throat hurt?" etc... That can help relieve any real worries. With a dog they just look so pathetic and sad and you have NO idea why. I would be the same way if Rooney started acting like you described.
And Fudge is SUPER cute!
Fudge was and is a beauty!! What if she had been sick with something else, and you know health wise I'm not an alarmist but sometimes you have to check. And you got reassurance as well, which is worth a ton. Not that it's related exactly, but I spent a lot of money on my backup generator because worrying with every storm was expensive in a different way.
Not possible to take any chance on that gorgeous boy.
Ah, Fudge, I'm sure it was worth every penny of that $700 for your mom to know you were okay. Take a chance with that sweet puppy? Are you kidding me? I would have done exactly the same thing!
