Tonight, we had a vet appointment for annual shots, etc. for Fudge and Vern. My DH got home early from work to help me take both dogs. Upon arrival, Vern saw himself in the mirror they have in a bookcase in the entryway and promptly wet himself. He then started barking his fiercest bark which is a cross between a deep, low bark and a beagle howl. It is always impressive when the receptionist has to come out with a mop and place a cone over the wet area made by your dog, before you have even signed in. I signed in and tried to direct my DH to where we usually sit, but he has a very rare Syndrome called, "I Never Do a Damn thing my Wife tells me to do" and proceeded to take the dogs to the farthest seat away from the entrance. I like to be up close, so I can escape :) When we moved up to the front, both dogs jumped on the seat next to me and sat like angels. Fudge even leaned over and gave me a kiss which told me A.) She is trying to butter me up, so I make Vern go first or B.) She is thinking about being bad and wants to distract me. While Vern was continuing to be the watch dog of the waiting room, the receptionist informed me that Vern wasn't even due for any shots. WTD!  Luckily, they were due next month, and the vet said it would be ok to do them a little early. I think my DH mentioned that he was impressed with my organizational skills and I think I mentioned that I had heard human bites were more dangerous than dog bites.

Once we were back in the exam room, both dogs looked like we beat them on a regular basis and proceeded to pant, get as low as they could to the ground, while trying to hide behind us. I was happy to see that at this visit, Vern did not spend the entire appointment growling at the vicious cat poster hanging on the wall. He has had problems with a bird poster and this cat poster in the past. Each dog went with the technician to be weighed and she said they were very good. Vern is now 85 pounds and Fudge is 46. The vet came in and started with Vern. She is a Purdue graduate just like my DH and I think it speaks to her skills that she was able to conduct the entire exam with Vern's head buried in my DH's armpit. I guess he thought if he couldn't see her, she couldn't see him. I think this is the way to go from now on, because he did not deposit another gift of pee like he did on our last visit when she came at him with the scary stethoscope. After she was done, Vern laid right down on the floor like he had just been put through the wringer. Next up was Fudge and let's just say, at my request, Mary Lou was called from the back to assist with this exam and they felt it best to do it in another room.  Again, when they brought her back, they said she had been excellent. I checked her over really good to be sure I had the correct dog, which I did.

Finally, we are done and wouldn't you know it, as we exit the exam room a guy holding a boxer comes in the door and all dogs exchanged a series of barks which ignited the waiting room full of dogs. My husband decided to take the dogs to the car and we had another dispute when I thought he said to open the door, but in fact had said to hold the door closed until he was ready. This caused a minor tiff about his speaking voice and my hearing, but ended with me paying the bill and making another appointment for Vern in three weeks. On the way out, a guy stopped us to tell us when he saw us come out the door, he thought we were walking a couple of horses.

Too funny!  I can just see the interchanges between you and your DH - mine and I have had very much the same kind of conversations MANY times!!!

I am sure that Vern did not pee himself.  He was doing what any good dog would do at the vet's and gave a urine sample.

Jane, I have a magnet in my house that says, "When All Else Fails, Mumble." I bought it for my DH, because I swear he does it on purpose. I can't hear him on the phone or most of the time face to face. My girls can't hear him either on the phone, so I know it isn't just me. I can see from the posts, that we aren't the only couple with the hearing/speaking problem.

They are both resting comfortably after their long ordeal yesterday. Maybe the vet is too.

OMD - you have missed your calling in life!  The boys provide the best material and even your DH is a contributor.  I think you all deserve your own TV sitcom.   You all are WAAAAY funnier than Charlie Sheen!  LMAO.  I'd watch for sure.

I believe the term is "selective hearing" but in my house it's DH who has the affliction, he is also afflicted with the "roll the eye", "shake the head" syndrome, while I confess to the "I am always right and you are always wrong" gift from God.

Vern, the 85lb baby and Fudge the know it all svelte girl, I wish I could hug them both right now.

Thanks for the wonderful little movie this morning....all your stories are in living color in my head.

Laurie, I always know it's going to be a GREAT day when I can start it off with one of your blogs.  This is just so darn funny!  Thanks for sharing your stories....it makes me believe my life with the Doods is not THAT wacky.  Poor Vern (all 85 pounds of him).  He must have been pretty scared to "pee himself".  Guinness pees spontaneously like that when he's happy (go figure).  He leaves a little trail behind him when he's excited...at Petco I just ignore it and pretend another dog did it.  At my Vet they don't get to take the boys into the back room to "work on them"....they won't go without me.  They BOTH cry for their Mommy.  What the Doodle is up with our DHs anyway.....the mumble and then get mad when we don't hear them?  I can't even tell you how many times a day I say "what'd you say"?......then big, huge sigh and he repeats it in a slightly more audible voice.  It's exhausting.  Just think you get to have all this fun all over again in three weeks!  Woo Hoo!!!!

LMAO!!!   I just love starting my day with a good Fudge and Vern story : )      Vern.....I wish I  could scoop you up in my arms and protect you from all of the mean and scary situations your parents expose you to!    You and Fudge are so darned cute....and your parents ... well they are hysterical!    (We suffer too from the voice/hearing syndrome)
