An Annual Event on Newfoundland Shores

Every year at the end of June or early in July the annual Rolling of the Capelin begins. This is a cause for much excitement and lots of fun.Capelin are small fish that come to our beaches every year to spawn, it can be difficult to accurately predict their arrival which is why we make many trips to Middle Cove to seek signs of their arrival, lucky for us it's only a 5 mins drive. Lots of people take to the beach to see the spectacle and for a free meal of this delicious little fish.
We love to go, not only for the fish but also for the entertainment and to chuckle at the folks who are willing to brave the cold atlantic water to get their share of the Capelin.

Here is a little video I did earlier this week, not too many people but this was the third day of the rolling so most folks had already gotten their bounty. It is so much fun to watch the little kids excited and having so much fun.

My favorite thing about the Rolling of the Capelin is that once the Capelin arrive the whales are never far behind and whale watching is my favorite part of summer.

What a beautiful thing to have 5 minutes from your home...can I be jealous or is that wrong?

We had this in California, can't remember when it happened but they were Grunioun....same exact scenario. Fun for all, but we had to do it at night.

Happy Canada Day!  Donna

I learned something new about the Eastern Shores of Canada today.   Are Capelin similar to flying fish or sardines?  How do you prepare them?  Always looking for a new taste experience. Loved the video.

That is seriously amazing. I have never seen anything like that! I can't believe how interesting and picturesque where you live is. I'm kinda jealous. :-)

Oh, and how cute is that little boy catching the fish!?

That is truly a phenomenon. The whales are amazing too.
