An update on Sophie.. "She can't wait until Monday"

Today marks the day we have had Sophie for four weeks. She has her next follow up appointment on Monday. Hopefully, she will recieve a bill of good health, and freedom from the cone and "rest". She's pretty sick of being lazy. See, after cataract surgery, dogs must "lay low" for a week. No chew toys. No toys at all! No running. No leash around the neck. Minimal public places. We have been instructed to thread the leash under the tummy and around one front leg to maintain control of her while outside. She missess her freedom.

She still manages to discover new things every day. Thursday, she diiscovered squirrels! Now that was a sight to see... She stood up on her back legs (that's about all she could do) and watched the squirrel. Just stood there and watched. She was soooo excited. I have a feeling our squirrels will get a run for there money now!
It's taking Don and I a bit of time to adjust to her sight. We find ourselves under estimating her. We are so used to her NOT being able to see. Since her surgery, she finds EVERY stick in the yard now-- EVERY ONE. Yesterday, Don had her in the front yard and she found a stick. She can't chew on things yet or play fetch so what did he do? The same thing he used to do. When he thought she wasn't looking he lightly tossed the stick into the neighbors yard. She wouldn't have a clue right? ... WRONG. Sophie new right were that stick was and couldn't figure out why we were changing the rules of her game. You could just hear the wheels turning in her head.. Come on...why would you throw it and not let me go get it?
We try to practice skills while hanging out in the house. She's always been go at "sit" "stay" "lay down" and "wait". Along with snuggeling on the couch, she learned something new commands. The first one is "up", we're teaching her to go from laying down to a sit. She's doin well with this, but not consistent yet. Her new favorite is "give me five". She does it on command every time!

So, we're gonna keep laying around, waiting for Monday to come. Then the excitement will really begin!

UPDATE/EDIT: This afternoon I jsut read the doctors note from Sophie's appointment this last Tuesday 12-2, My husband didn't show it to me but he left it laying on the counter, (all my husband told me was that she was doing great and is on track for her follow up appointment Monday) Silly guy forgot to tell me the fun part!! It says: Sophie has 80% vision currently. The eye pressure is low.. and does not need any additional medications for high pressure. Her vision should improve even more!!
She is on track for her appointment Monday where she will likely get the cone removed and reduce her medications... YAY!!!

Woohoo! 80% vision--those fuzzy squirrels haven't got a chance, LOL Post-op inactivity is pretty stressful for doods & their peoples, can't wait till she gets to chase those sticks :)

Thank you for the update on Sophie. She looks like an angel in the sunshine picture. I think we all feel like she is a part of our lives. I was so happy to hear she is doing so well.

That is a very good out come( 80%). I work in Optometry... I do have some questions for you.
Do they do lens replacement on dogs like they do for people? Now for people you would expect about a 1m for best possible correction healing time is it the same for dogs?
How great that she came see the squirrels, and sticks. I reminds me of when we have kids come in and they have a higher rx and they can see the leaves on trees for the 1st time. It gets me teary eyed every time... I am such a softy when it comes to kids and animals.
I am just so amazed by you and your husband, I really feel my next Doodle will be a rescue.

A great recovery. It's going to be so fun to watch her discover new things AND be able to chase them down!

Thank you for the update - I am so thrilled that she is making such a seedy recovery. It is truly a blessing - not just for the 3 of you but for everyone on DK and beyond (even several of my family members) who helped raise funds, have prayed for her to get the surgery and to find her forever home! What a lucky Doodle!
Samantha and I look foward for the continuing updates.

Liz, you and Don opened your home to Sophie, and by doing so, saved her from being euthanized in a kill shelter that had labelled her "unadoptable." Now the universe is rewarding all three of you with these blessings.
It is a happy coincidence that this is happening during the "Season of Miracles." We are all so thankful for having had the chance to play a part in this story! Thank you for continuing to share your news of "Our Sophie Girl"!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Liz. I'm smiling from ear to ear! Looks like you and Don will have more adjusting to do than our Sophie Girl will, as she continues to discover her beautiful "new" world! It also sounds as if she's very, very bright! Have a wonderful weekend while you three wait for Monday!
