Antibiotic Woes

My poor Phoebe is sick again--the culture sent out after the last UTI came back showing crystallizations. She is now on yet another round of antibiotics and, this morning, vomited 6 times. I took her in to the vet immediately and it seems she might be allergic to the Clavamax. She is on another restricted diet for a day and we will start another antibiotic tomorrow night and see how that goes ( hopefully the new one will not have any ill side effects). She turns 5 months today and I swear she has been sick for most of the three months that we have had her. She is all droopy and sad right now and I could not be any more sad if I tried. My poor little--okay, so she is 32 pounds!--doodle.

Oh, no - not again?!?!? Isn't there something they can do? Have you contacted your breeder?? This is crazy. Maybe your guarentee should get some legs about now. Maybe you should write a post and see if anyone else has had this severe of a problem. You know I adore the people at AWC, but maybe it is time for a second opinion if they don't stop soon.? Keep me posted.

Stacy--no, but good question. I feed her Natural Balance but could food cause a UTI or does the food simply produce inocuous crystals in the bladder? I need to run this past my vet--thanks!

Hi Phoebe's Mom - I'm sorry you have a sick puppy. I was wondering if you are, by chance, feeding Nutro dog food. My vet and my trainer have both said that Nutro can cause crystals in the urine.

Tonight I was told I could give her a half cup of chicken and rice. Thankfully, she loves it but she is showing no interest in wanting food which is so unlike my little chow-hound. It is making me feel even worse. She is also just moping around and laying down--usually she is walking on top of the back of my couch making me crazy--how I wish she would today. The vet said to follow her lead so I will try to manage my own stress and just let her rest today. Hopefully, she will be back to her old self tomorrow and the new antibiotic--which I start tomorrow night--will not present any new problems. I will run the yogurt/pumpkin idea by my vet to see if she thinks Phoebe can handle that starting tomorrow.

I give Samantha 2 tblsp of Plain, Fat Free, Probiotic LaYogurt as part of her dinner everyday.
Maybe you can mix with pumpkin to help her tummy.

Maybe ask the vet if she can have plain yogurt; that will help her stomach by replacing some of the good bacteria (probiotics) she's losing from the antibiotics. That's what has been recommended to me when Jack is on antibiotics.
I'm sorry poor Phoebe is sick and you are both feeling sad. Hope the new med helps.
