So... last night Luna started excessively licking her lips and making hiccupping/gagging noises... and her tummy felt a bit tense.  My first thought was "OH NO, it's bloat!".  We rushed her to the local vet E.R. (5 minutes from our house!)

After a thorough check (and $170) she was just having an upset tummy (she's a bit of a garbage can - probably ate something on a walk that didn't agree with her).  The vet "prescribed" us to go get some Pepcid AC from the drug store and feed her rice/ground beef for a day or so. She also gave us a really good description of what a dog with bloat seems like.  (Can't really type it out... she basically impersonated/acted out being a dog with bloat for us!)

She seems fine now - she has asked to play and is in good spirits.  I think all these dire tales I've seen of dogs getting bloat has turned me a bit paranoid.  At least now I have some Pepcid AC for the next time she eats something that doesn't agree with her ;)

Calling ahead is crucial; that way they will watch for the dog and get him right into the treatment room. With bloat, time is of the essence.

Oh my! So glad it wasn't bloat! Our emergency vet said if you think your dog is experiencing bloat put them in the car & call on the way, don't ever wait! For our Doberman it was to late, plus he had been through chemo & most of the cancer had come back! It was the scariest thing I ever went through(and one of my saddest days, ever)! I tell people time & time again, that if you know nothing about bloat or gastric tortion, to do your research, cause you don't have a lot of time! Hope Luna feels better!

Poodles and Retrievers all have deep narrow chests and are all on the list of breeds prone to bloat.

Glad to hear that Luna is OK. I am a hypercondriac doodlemom (who lives less than 5 mins from the vets office), so I'm out the door at the slightest sign of trouble too.

Are doodles prone to bloat? I understand breeds that are at risk are those which are "deep chested" like danes, shepherds, rotties etc. If so, I'll add it to the list of things to watch for.
