Cataract -GoldenDoodle 2yrs old

Hi

My dog Shadow is 2 yrs old. Its a golden doodle. Its a lovely dog.

From the time he was a puppy most of the time he was not able to find the ball. I recently noticed him dashing on the open closets. I took him to the ophthalmologists.  Shadow was diagnosed with cataract in both the eyes. The ophthalmologists also mentioned the cataract is matured and it has started to dissolve.

I'm from India. This is my first dog. I don't have pet insurance for shadow. I have called up different pet insurance companies . Pet insurance companies say they don't cover any preexisting conditions.

I really appreciate any suggestions or advice or information.

Have you contacted your breeder?  Perhaps he or she will help you with the cost.  At the very least they should know that one of their pups eyesight   is in jeopardy, possibly even when you got him.

I am very sorry to hear about your dog. This is not a condition that will fix itself. It sounds like the others have given you some ggood ideas about how to get help.

Dissolving doesn't mean the problem is solved. When a cataract matures and begins to dissolve, it means it's in an advanced stage and that can lead to some serious conditions, including uveitis and glaucoma. Here is some information: http://www.eyecareforanimals.com/animal-eye-conditions/canine/346-c...

It's surprising that the vet didn;t notice this at prior appointments, since it has to have been there a long time to have gotten to this point.

It seems a shame to let a young dog suffer and go blind when the condition could be treated. I understand that the cost is very high, but it's our responsibility and obligation when we choose to get a pet to take care of them and provide a good quality of life and proper health care. There are resources available. Care credit, as Laurie mentioned. Yes, it's like a credit card, but what's wrong credit cards. They're for this exact purpose, to help you pay for something that you can't pay for upfront. There are also fundraising sites like Go Fund Me and You Caring where you can get donations to help pay for the treatment. I'm sure many people here would contribute to help your poor dog.

Hi Joane

Thanks for sharing the information . I checked out for a rough estimate in MA . It is around 4800 for surgery alone.

Hi Linda

Im looking out for some ones dog who had a similar case of dissolving cataract. The vet said the cataract will dissolve but I'm not sure how much will it dissolve. He has given a eye drop for the inflammation,

My thoughts are if someone has gone through the similar stuff for their dog they might have some more clarity of how much will it dissolve by itself.

 Thanks.

Hi Karen
Ophthalmologist has given him eye drops fro the inflammation.  The website gave a good insight.

Thanks.

Hi Laurie

Thanks for the suggestion . But care credit is just like a credit card. I will get details about it.

I would follow your vet's recommendation and do all I could to see that Shadow's cataracts are taken care of and treated. You might want to look into CareCredit. It is a credit card, but would allow you to pay for Shadow's care over time.

A cataract that has started to dissolve causes painful inflammation. She really needs to be treated.

Hi Mullya ~ Welcome to Doodle Kisses.  What was the veterinarian's recommendation?  I understand you do not have insurance and now that you have a diagnosis - I doubt you will find any pet insurance company that would cover pre-existing conditions.  I am not sure from your post what suggestions you are looking for.  Are you looking for advice from others that have had to go through this surgery with their doodle? Are you able to provide medical care for your doodle out of pocket or are you looking for an organization that might be of financial help?  I have not personally had any experience with cataracts on our doodles.  I would suggest rather than start a blog, that you start a discussion asking your specific questions concerning cataracts and your situation.  Hopefully, there will be other members that can be of help for you.  I did see that Joanne replied below.  I too hope you will find a way to help your dog.  He is so young and has a long life ahead of him.  By the way, your profile photo of your Shadow is very cute.
