For the past 7 months we have been living with my inlaws, after we moved half way round the country. Time has come to get our own place. We have paid off our credit cards, and saved $3000 for rent, deposit, bits of furniture, and emergencies.
For the past 2 months we have been hoping to move into the ground floor of a house DH's best friends Grandparents own and are renovating. Unfortunately it still is not ready. They say they are now hoping for mid may. But DHs brother is coming home from school for the summer in mid may. His bedroom has been turned into the office, and we have to only other free bedroom. so...
For the past 2 days we have been house hunting. Its not easy finding a place that will allow pets, let alone a big dog and 3 cats. We are currently in the country, about 30km from the city. We want to move into the city as we only have 1 car between us, which is quite a pain. The city is small (75,000 people) and you can drive from one end to the other in less than 20 minutes, so we werent fussy where in the city we moved to. Our wish list included;
~grass somewhere for Cooper to go potty on
~area close by for walks or play space for Cooper
~no carpet for easy cleaning of Coopers poorly tummy accidents
~space for coopers crate, the big cat tree, and the pet food freezer (takes preference over space for a couch as we live on out computers)
~parking
We were prepared to compromise, and have less inside space for us, if it meant we could have outside space for Cooper
The fisrt place we saw was a good sized well layed out, wood/tiled floor 2nd floor apartment. But the building (4 apartments) was nasty and there was very little light coming in from the windows. There was parking, but no grass nearby, not even for a pee spot. That got a big NO
The second place was further out of town, and was a 3 floor, large apartment complex. An older building, but lots of grass outside. Enough space for Cooper to be on a long lead and really run. I was unsure as to what the inside would look like, but was pleasantly surprised. A large 2 bedroom apartment, with 100% new tiles. A separate space for a dining table too. The kitchen was small and the counter and cupboards were old, but it was functional and very clean. The superintendent lived in the building and was really nice. Lots of dogs live in the building. Though this apartment was on the second floor at the end of the hallway, there is a back entrance just a few steps from the apartment leading onto the parking lot and large grassy area. Pretty easy for going potty.
The third place was a 3 floor 6 apartment building near down town. The 1 bedroom apartment was large, same size as the second place, but had lots of wasted space in the huge hallway. it was still being renovated, but the carpets are supposed to be ripped up and laminate being put in. There was a small back yard for potty and play. But it was on the 3rd floor, with steep stairs.
The 3rd place was better location wise, but we preferred the layout of the second place, and the second place was better for Cooper. We had filled out an application, and decided the 3rd place would be our fall back option. I noticed we had an ink star on our application, the other guy there didnt. A good omen??? We were told we would know on Wednesday. Once I got home, I had an email to call the super. Just as I was about to call, she called, the place is ours!
So we are moving in 1 week! And it has shared laundry and a balcony too :)
The inlaws have lots of furniture in their basement we can take, and the grandparents in law have kitchen stuff. All we need to buy is a new bed and perhaps an armchair
