Let me officially say "I hate dew claws!"

Murphy just ripped his dew claw out for the third time. This time I pulled it out so we didn't make the rush to the vet...it was after hours anyway. (I had watched the vet do this the first 2 times.) I used a stiptic pencil to stop the bleeding. He really isn't happy with me right now.

It has happened the same way all three times. Running in freshly mowed grass catching a frisbee. WTD!!!

Has anyone else had issues with dew claws?

But they do do things. My dogs seem to use them for holding things they're gnawing on.

Bandit has his and Rosey's were removed. I wish Bandy didn't have his as they are something else to get injured and they don't do anything. They feel like dead little baby toes with claws;)

I tried to get a few photos of his remaining dew claw. Should give you the idea of the size.

Yes, we have just this week we were camping in WestVirginia National Parks. Guinness plays very hard and he has this big Tug ball he just loves,we throw he catches, but it was on asphalt and his Daddy played a little too long and thus injured his Dew Claw plus his back leg. But, he is better after a few days of rest.

Murphy is doing fine. Still doing some licking, but fine. (I tell him to stop, and he looks at me with those eyes like "Its your fault, ya know")

Yes, he ripped the whole nail out. It has taken 13 months for this one to grow back in, but it did. He has ripped the same one out all three times. They are huge. I actually used garden pruners to trim the other one. The grinder catches the hair. They are very thick, but flat, and grow in a C shape. About the size of my little finger. (I'll take photos with my new camera.)
If he is ever under anesthesia for any other reason, I will have it done. Thanks.

Well, I just got a surprise. I was mistaken about where I thought the dew claws are, and I looked at images on-line to see. Then I looked at the dog I have had for almost 5 years, and guess what? He does have them!
I don't know how it could be that I never paid attention to this before. probably because the dew claws are just about the only part of his body he hasn't had a problem with, lol!
How is Murphy doing?

Did he rip the whole nail part out down to the quik part too. I would have thought that if it had been entirely ripped off it wouldn't grow back. I know some dogs have very prominent dew claws. They just hang there and they have no control over them. They are useless. If this has happened a couple of times I would consider permanent removal. Neely has them but they are not very prominent at all. I just have to trim the nails regularly along with the rest. Dogs arent' people they don't have people emotions! Yeah right! I have seen those eyes looking at me just oozing guilt out of me!
