Let me officially say "I hate dew claws!"

Murphy just ripped his dew claw out for the third time. This time I pulled it out so we didn't make the rush to the vet...it was after hours anyway. (I had watched the vet do this the first 2 times.) I used a stiptic pencil to stop the bleeding. He really isn't happy with me right now.

It has happened the same way all three times. Running in freshly mowed grass catching a frisbee. WTD!!!

Has anyone else had issues with dew claws?

Hmmm... I'll have to look! I know she has a bump, clawlike toe.. but don't remember feeling any nail or anything.. I will have to look closer tomorrow when she wakes up.

Doodles usually have one dew claw on each front paw, higher up that the regular claws and more. It's important to keep them clipped since they won't wear down and the claw can grow back into the leg tissue. Fewer breeders are removing dew claws and we've had discussions on their utility. Some doodles may have rear dew claws and some breeds have double dew claws.

Okay... I guess this is one more thing I haven't known... I thought the dew claws were automatically removed at the breeder? Excuse my silly question....How do I know if she still has them or not?

I don't even know whether the other dogs I've had (Brittany, Chesapeake, and Shih Tzu) had dew claws or not. I think they did, but they never ripped them out. Of course, not even the Chessie was 100 lbs. I don't know if it has something to do with the way he runs or the way the dew claw grows. I guess Murphy is just *special*. lol

Yes, My Murphy has ripped his once. And it is always a consideration now that it;s happened once. I would've liked them to have been removed, but I have to admit, compared to dogs that have had them removed, he does seem to "handle and hold'" his bones and toys much more easily. Not sure why they were not done. Maybe my breeder will chime in, but I'm sure there is a good reason.

Thanks guys. Murphy is better this morning. He quit licking the paw.
Last night he would lick his paw and look at me like I did this to him.
Guilt trip worked.

Oh, poor Murphy. That sounds painful. We've never had any issues (yet). Feel better, Murphy!
