We put in a doggie sand box...and let them dig there..they seem to stay away from "our" areas now, and dig in "their" sand box...much easier and cleaner digging also!!! Leaving them unattended is not always an option, especially if you have a doggie door and the dog is potty trained. Mine were potty trained by the time they were 2-3 months ( within a week of coming to us ) and we trained them to use the doggy door..We also needed to cover all sprinkler and drip lines with "undiggable" rock!!! I used Large River Rock and Large Chunk Landscape Rock! They can not dig thru that..the sound of the water thru the pipes is almost tooooooo much for them!!!
We decided that we would let our LD dig, but only where we wanted him to. So, every time he began digging we directed him to 'his' spot. He soon learned that he was to only dig in that one place.
I have never had a digging problem in 51 years of living with dogs, and I really think part of the resson is that I have never had a dog who was left unattended in the yard for any length of time. If you're there, you can stop him...a simple No, a spray bottle if he's persistent, distracting him with a ball or other game. Especially at this young age, you will want to be nearby anyway to praise pottying, etc., and to check up on the quality of the output, lol. Good time to stop a digging habit before it starts.
I have known terriers who were obsessive diggers, but most of the other dogs I've known who were diggers were doing it out of boredom.
I have used the following with different dogs, each of them responded to something different.
1) filling the hole with their own poop
2) fill the hole with dirt or their poop then sprinkle the dirt with cayenne pepper or tabasco sauce
3) if he goes back to the same place all the time fill a small water balloon and put it in the hole, cover and when the puppy goes to dig again it will pop on him and hopefully stop him.
Good luck!
