In yappy hour Friday I was talking about a big family reunion I was attending today.  There were 950 direct descendents on the invite list and there were nearly 350 attendees.  I spoke of the cousin's quilt that had been made prior.  The pattern is called the Irish Chain.  Each of the original first cousins came up with an idea of how they wished to be represented and a square of the quilt was made for them.  The other squares were filled with things that represented the family as a whole (shamrocks, farm impliments and the like).  I was asked to post a picture of the quilt, so here it is, along with a close up of my father's "square."  It was raffled off in the end to cover expenses and fittingly one of the original cousins won it.  It was on display today.

This is a stunning quilt! I collect quilts and I appreciate all the hard work that goes into making a beautiful one. This was a neat idea.

We did that with our family for a marriage! Gramma started by giving all the cousins a piece to decorate any way they wanted for the couple using memories we had of the bride. Then she laid it out to be quilted by the family all together. It was a real keepsake. Not just for the bride but for all of us included.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone - it is very, very special.  A professional makes the quilt.  The cousins could either make their own square design, or relay their idea to the pro who did it for them.  It is a very big undertaking to oganize so many people.  We have this major cousin's reunion once every 10 years.  They also made a DVD available to buy for $5 that contained a picture slide show of all of the family members.  p.s. Gavin is in the picture of our family that I submitted :)
