First the good news - at Stuart's vet check today the little moose (maybe that should be his name) gained almost 3 pds. since Friday!!!!  He weighed 10.5 pds!  In the two weeks since he was taken from the mill he has doubled his weight.

5/31  - 4.75 lbs - Rescue Date

6/7    - 6.9 lbs - Stuarts Gotcha Date

6/10  - 7.6 lbs

6/15  - 10.5 lbs  Great news that he is growing like a weed.

Now for poop issues.

Test #1 - direct smear - good news that they didn't see anything

Test #2 - float - they saw something "suspicious"  possible giardia cyst but could something of the same shape (circular) that was injested from a stick or leaf - so this is inconclusive

Test #3 - snap - came back negative

So they Knew that the Coccidia is gone and they Think the giardia is also but they can't be 100%.  So - they are going to extend the time period of Stuart taking the Metronidazole and due to Karen's advise - I asked about the Panacur.  Stuart & Rooney (just as a pre-caution) are both on a 5 day Panacur treatment.  It is a white liquid and must taste bad and both of them really fought me as I used a dropper.

We will continue to pick up the poop till we get 100% clean - They'll test again in 3 weeks.  We will continue to limit expose between the boys till the Panacur is done - another 5 days.

Are we being TOO cautious?

No you're not too cautious.  I would do the same, it's only five more days and once it's over hopefully you won't ever look back.  Amazing what some good feeding will do!

Both times my dogs had giardia, we treated with three days of Panacur and 10 days of Metronidazole.  I also treated both dogs at the same time, even though only one had tested positive.  According to my Vet, because they were both being treated there was no need to try to keep them separated.  My Panacur came in pill form, which was easy because I could put it in a pill pocket.  I would definitely continue to clean up the poop until you get the "clean" diagnosis.  It's great news that he's gained this much weight so quickly....good job!

Wow Stuart, you'll be as big as Rooney in no time. My motto, better safe than sorry!

I don't think you're being too cautious. I think you're being a protective doodle mom, as you should be :-)

I'm not sure what the right answer is, but I'd say better safe than sorry.  I'm happy to hear that he's doing so well.  I can't wait to see more videos once they can really play together.

No way, you are not being to cautious!  But all of this is  GREAT NEWS and within no time, life will be grand, two doods will be playing and you will have a big Stuy (I think he looks like he will be big!).

There is nothing wrong with being cautious.  If they are both taking panacur and it's a treatment for giardia.  If a dog that is not infected with giardia still be able to get giardia while on panacur.  If the answer is NO.  IMO you wouldn't need to limit their time together.  Just a thought.
