For the past few weeks I have been trimming Abel's hair. Most evening's he is pretty good and will just lay there. He was getting pretty long and hot so I just trim him a bit every night haha. Even though we brushed Abel a couple times a week I discovered he has matts! His armpits, ears, and beard/moustache had some pretty bad ones. There were a couple random matts that were easy to cut out. I had to spend A LONG time on his ears and beard though. I think he may still have some. I am quite worried about his beard/moustache though cause what if I have to cut it right off? I can't beleive we let this happen :S From now on it's gonna be brushings almost daily.

Personally, I would recommend take the length down for the coat change phase if you are having trouble keeping up with the matting. The armpits and under the ears areas you won't even notice when they are clipped down. If you get it cut shorter now you get to choose what it will look like, if you want until the matts have the better of you, you will get a shaved doodle ....... All this from someone who just took the clippers to one of mine for the 1st time and she is 2. She however sheds, so the matting wasn't so bad. That being said, I love the way she looks when I took her shorter. Same shaggy look, just shorter.

Guinness just turned a year, and I struggle with mats daily. I brush him every afternoon, and by morning there are little ones already formed. It's the coat change.

Is Abel still about 9 months old (I looked at your profile!)? If so, that is when Peri was the worst. She matted a lot from 9-11 months. Recently, over the past month, we are only having to brush her weekly. And she will still have a matt or two under her arms or near the ears. We also had her cut to about 1 1/2 inches long at 9 months. She is much more managable being shorter. It will get better! You will more than likely not have to brush daily forever...
