When I think about Independence Day, I always think about my ancestors who were brave enough AND SMART ENOUGH to leave their homes in the old word and venture to our wonderful country...
Of course, some of my ancestors did not come to the United States. They came to the colonies of Virginia and Pennsylvania as well as from Ireland to the State of Tejas and Coahilla which was then part of Mexico and which, after they spilled some of their blood in the cause of independence, became the State of Texas. One of my ancestors signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and several died in the Texas Revolution from Mexico.
I have ancestors who fought on both sides in the American Revoluton and I have a transcript of the travel allowance for which two of my militia ancestors applied in order to get reimbursed for their travel home after the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. I also have the transcript of a diary from a member of my great-great gandfather's Civil War regiment which tells of a torchlight parade as they left home for the First Battle of Bull Run.
I owe my brave and intelligent ancestors so very much for making it possible for me to be born and to live live in this wonderful nation...
I was proud of the U.S. Service Men and Women who took the Oath of Citizenship at the White House today. And I thought that they are cut from the same cloth as my ancestors who have fought in every U .S. war except for the Spanish American War.

I am reading this after the 4th but I too, as did most Americans had brave ancestors who came here and I am grateful for that and for living in this country.
A very nice tribute; thank you for the American history lesson.
Those of us in the US are very lucky indeed!
