Since he's de-legged and decapitated the last of two rubber pigs (after 2 years so that's still pretty good!) and his beloved little Wal Mart latex squeaker is circling the drain (intact but getting a bit grimy and thin)...I thought it was time for Rosco to have a brand new noisy toy.

So on Sunday I took him on a mommy-doggy trip to PetCo so we could pick out just the right one. I heeled Rosco into the store and down the toy aisle and had him sit stay while I examined the options, giving each one a squeeze to hear it's sound..after much deliberation I settled on this guy.

The sound wasn't high pitched and seemed like a good fit, one he wouldn't try to crunch through or demolish for a long time to come.

As Rosco waited patiently, I tossed it to him and he craned his neck, didn't break his stay, but also didn't catch it. It fell next to him and he sniffed it joyfully. He was VERY excited about this new noisemaker!

After we paid for it...we headed to a local college athletic field for some fetch.

OMG...he fell in LOVE with this thing...

BUT...as he mouthed and pawed and squashed it, I realized something unsettling...

It sounded like a GIGGLING/CRYING BABY!!!

Now, the chances that Rosco would confuse a baby with a squeaky toy based solely on my perception that it sounds like a baby are slim... but STILL.what if!?

So, I gave it to a friend of mine for her dog. But first I put it in a box in our carport...a carport that is visible to the dogs only from a set of stairs leading up to an apartment above our garage. Rosco SAW me put it there and he and Thule (Rosco MORE than Thule) have been climbing up there staring obsessively at what no longer exists.

And what's hilarious is that, yesterday, once I realized he was OCD'ing over this, I leashed him up and took him AND the squeaker to my car and had him WATCH me put it in the car.

Doesn't matter. He STILL thinks it's in the carport (which is not a location my car has ever been).

Poooooooooooor poooooooooooor Rosco. Hoping beyond all hope.

NOW I must find him a replacement that sounds a bit less human.

Haha Joanne! Rosco is fine..I think he's over it. The next challenge will be some lessons about 'dog toys' vs. 'baby toys' and how the twain shall never meet unless the BABY initiates a mommy-approved trade. I've hidden the baby toys we've received and will have to plan some 'Doggies May Not Mouth or Covet These Toys 101' class sessions.

Okay, so I am still real worried about Roscoe. Has this been settleed yet? Did he get a new toy? I still say Adina posts her address and we all send a huge box of toys. I know, while Adina is at her baby shower we will plan a surprise Doggie Toy Party at her house.

Got Penny's from the Doctors Foster and Smith catalog, they are online at www.drsfostersmith.com. They are not expensive. After I posted this I noted that Adina says Rosco just destroys them, I suppose it all depends on the individual dog.

Have you tried those "Skineez"? They are like stuffed animals but without the stuffing, look like road kill in fact. You can get a fox, a raccoon, and a skunk. They have a squeaker in the nose and the tail. Our pup Penny adores hers (a skunk we call Stinky...original I know), and likes to put both squeakers in her mouth and plays some very unusual and interesting tunes. They take a lot of beating too, Penny plays with hers A LOT, and both squeakers are still intact!

Awwwww- can't he pleeeese have the Elvis chicken back?? We once hid an annoying toy that our Wheaton got for Christmas in a closet on the upper shelf of our guest room closet. He almost tore apart that closet door with his scratching that entire night. Then I hid it in a filing cabinet in my office while my husband took him out for a walk. Again-he sat by the filing cabinet crying until the morning. Again, another walk at which time I put this toy out in the garbage can in our garage. When the dog came in he went right to the door off our laundry room that goes into the garage and sat there crying. Garbage pick up had happened the day before and they were not coming back again for two weeks!! I did not want to put it in one of the cars as I figured out that he may rip the car apart to try to find this thing the next time he came with us in the car. I finally had to send it over to my neighbours house. Even after that-the dog would try to go up to their house during our walks!! He was "possessed" by this toy. It had never happened before or after.

My kids drove myself and every wal-mart patron within a 40' radius of us insane with that rubber chicken. Needless to say I dod not buy it. But I think you can be confident giving it back to Rosco - he wont mistake it for the baby -lol!

Karen + Joanne: Rosco will kill most anything with fur. Even those skineeze unstuffed stuffies lasted a mere 5 minute. But soft latex toys last a very very looooong time for us.

OMGoodness Adina, that is sooooo funny. I do understand your concern though. Lucy had one just like that only a girl in a bikini. Do you remember the pic I posted of it? It was a Christmas present to her. She just loved it. It didn't last more than a couple of weeks though. She just has to find the squeaker, that was in the neck. You will find Rosco another one, I know. Happy hunting.
