I saw Toby the other day chewing away on something . Could not make it out so I closed in for an inspection. I pried open his jaws ( which he lets me do without chewing off my hand). I end up finding a two inch WIRE!!! Don't even want to think if what could have happened and grateful that mother' instinct transcends to canines. It was stuck between his teeth which explains the incessant gum chewing behavior. Could not figure out where it came from so deduced it was some long ago Xmas tree ornament hook. We have it no further thought until the next day when we found all his dog tags on the bottom of the crate!! The wire was the little loop that the tags hang on. And there is his rabies tag totally chewed up . So now he is tagless until I get a new hook. And apparently I now know the vet will re-issue a new tag with a new number. Who knew. It is incredible what they will chew!!

Wow, glad you discovered the source of the metal.  So glad Toby is okay.

I take collar and tags off when Chance is in his crate. But he once grabbed his collar from a table and chewed the plastic attachment off.

Stick to your kibble, Toby!  So glad he's okay and his mama is alert!

Toby! silly dood, wires have no taste anyway.

We take Q's collar off when he is in the crate as others mentioned to avoid getting caught.  It also helps to keep matting down in that area.  Unfortunately, you are just about heading to that stage= the dreaded mats!

Oh Toby!  What a rascal.  I always used to take Gavin's collar off before putting him in his crate as I was always worried that his collar or tags would get hung up on the crate wires.

Oh my...thank goodness you discovered that before he had swallowed it.  Toby...you are keeping your Mommy on her toes...isn't it amazing how puppies put absolutely everything in their mouths that they can find

I meant to add that I got them through dogids.com

We got tags that attach to the collar, but that doesn't solve the rabies tag issue. I'm so glad you were able to recover that wire!!!

I'm so glad that you got it out of Toby's mouth and that he didn't swallow it.  We don't use the wire that the tags come on.  We have S shaped pieces that you pry open, stick the tag on and then close back up.  Found them at the hardware store and we have had no trouble with the tags!

OMD! So happy you got it out fast! Yes, they are incredible!

Many owners take their tags/collar off if in a wire crate so they don't get hooked up on the wires. The little tag holders that can be put off and on quickly could solve any further issues! Good doodle mom!!
